Just play in windowed mode in a 4:3 resolution, with the height the same or close to the same as your desktop resolution. Then you'll get a "letterbox" effect, but with the sides cut off.

I found some gorgeous large scale pictures from the game on a fansite, unfortunately I can't remember the URL, I think it was a German one.

Widescreen or not, my advice is you wait. There's some quest bugs, gameplay and interface issues/missing parts that won't ruin the experience, but will diminish it for sure - which is a shame because it's basically awesome. Plus the mod community is building a tiny amount of steam, so it might be worth it to save the first impressions of Stalker till something good comes out of there (I really recommend you at least look for better English translations of dialogue, if you're playing that localization).
I'm halfway through and waiting.
Abstinence joke goes here.

The bad translation is all part of the feel of the game. The only mods I suggest you play with on your first run are real gun names, annoying audio fixes and a soundpack. The default dragunov sound is just pathetic.

Personally I played with a balance mod, and also one to make anomalies invisible and silent. Anomalies all over the place look silly, hurting both the atmospheric and gameplay aspects of zone navigation. I guess it's only fair to note that this is all coming from a longtime lover of both the book and the movie.

Yeah, I got a realism mod which also made anomalies invisible, had to edit that part out cause I couldn't stand it. Also, does anyone know which file it is that determines whether or not your armour gets damaged? That realism mod seemed to remove damage to armour, which seemed a bit lame for a realism mod.

I like being able to see them, I hate the beeping sound though. (a softer sound would solve that)

Yeah, I am a bit of the way through but might take a break - it's fun but I just encountered what seems to be a very nasty bug.

What sort of bug is it?
