I'll be keeping the pistol around because it's cool. The assault rifle is handy for large-scale killification, but I'm a dude with a groovy long coat and sunglasses welded to my skull, and nothing ties that image together better than a big, badass handgun.
nerrrrrrrd.
In fact, now that I think about it, I've only used the assault rifle once thus far, during the Osgood warehouse infiltration, which kinda spun out of control in a real hurry. But other than that unfortunate incident, I've been one cool, stealthy cat.
Heh I wish I was that stealthy like people talk about... with no-kill games and all that, but it can be a pain some times, I had lots of trouble on that stupid freight ship especially, I could lob a LAM from somewhere hidden, move completely silently and unseen to another hidden location, and somehow the guys know EXACTLY where to run to to find me instead of going to where the blast was, I eventually just got sick of it and started blowing them away, or at least shooting them up to the point where they stop fighting (which is hard to do on purpose).
And also a certain part where you return to the 'Ton and they KNOW you are coming and theres guys running around before you even get down the ladder... and you sit up there on the fire escape while they run around under you like morons, making it hard to even tranq them because its hard to shoot the darts over the edge without them being stopped by air. You can of course just drop down and take some bullets while you run to the back door of the bar... but either way there's no stealth whatsoever to this part, somebody is getting shot and I'd rather it not be me.
There's no point in keeping the pistol when you get the
sniper rifle (except for sniper ammo being scarce). The assault rifle is a poor replacement for the pistol unless you invest in max rifle skills to make it incredibly accurate. Even then it's relatively weak.
I never did find much use for the sniper rifle.. I think I used it more at close range than actual distance sniping when I did use it. I threw mine away to make room for a certain special weapon that the game requires you to get. Also the assault rifle is pretty accurate at any skill level if you kit it out with recoil and accuracy mods, provided you shoot in bursts (as you should) but that still leaves the problem of it being weak though.

The sniper rifle is actually incredibly useful. It's usually a one-shot kill at any range, and with max rifle skill the zoom wobble is gone. Also, at max rifle skill it can destroy cameras with a single shot, and I think turrets too.

Assuming you're talking about the right weapon (same inventory size, right?)..the game doesn't actually require you to get it. Simply looking at the damn thing is sufficient to complete that mission.
I made the same mistake first time round, too. Inventory tetris ftw.

Hmm, I never realized that. When I used it, some times it took two shots, even if the first one was a head shot... maybe my skill was just low, and I figured most levels aren't big enough to require a sniper rifle, though on a couple it can be used fully I guess. I took a multipurpose approach to the game though, using more technical skills and tactics instead of being a killing machine with a particular weapon (which might have actually made the game harder, I'm not sure)

That's good to know, I've been carrying that thing around forever... it's a nice weapon though if you can get close and aim for the neck.
I also find it funny how the inventory is arranged... like if you were full and drop an assault rifle to pick up a sniper rifle, it won't let you do it because the assault rifle is four squares in a box shape, and the sniper rifle is four squares in a row... so you have to juggle stuff to accommodate something that's basically the same size...

I'm carrying the sniper rifle because I recall it being very handy in a couple places later in the game, but thus far I haven't yet fired it in anger. I've been pumping every accuracy and recoil mod I can find into the assault rifle, and testing firings indicate that it's improved significantly as well. I get good grouping and minimal climb even on full auto. And I dumped my pistol (actually gave it to that Renton guy at the 'Ton) in favour of the stealth pistol, which will do the same job for me in a far cooler fashion.
None of which really means much because I haven't made any kills since the Osgood Incident beyond one or two junkie drug dealer scumbag fucks who don't count anyway. But at some point I'm going to have to go to work, and I think I'll be pretty well-equipped when I do.

I just started a Rifle playthrough and let me just say the Assault Rifle is fucking awesome. I upgraded to Advanced right at the start (got Computers when I had the points) and am saving up for Mastery and have just gotten to La Guardia. I put the Laser Mod on the Assault Rifle and even in the second level it was killing troops with a single burst to the head. "It's good but only later on" is demonstrably nonsense.
I'm throwing Recoil and Reload mods at it, put a couple of Accuracies onto the Sniper Rifle (removing shaking from the scope) and now just have to figure out which one I want to Silence first :)

Are there enough mods to really load out both weapons at a reasonably early point in the game? I've got the assault rifle well tricked-out, but I haven't put anything on the sniper rifle yet. While I don't expect to be making much use of either for awhile yet (at least until I get away from the UNATCO guys) sooner or later it's going to become an issue. If I can really only get one of the built up to solid effectiveness I'd like to stop lugging the other one around everywhere I go.
That said, the assault rifle looks to be in pretty good shape already. Once I get a silencer on it, I may be able to leave it alone.

You could keep the assault rifle and just put a scope on either the pistol or the crossbow(maybe a few range mods) for long range stuff.

Both the stealth pistol and normal pistol are well worth keeping and upgrading. The only true silent killers are the stun/riot prod (it's also pretty much the most satisfying stealth tool IMO) and the baton (with high melee skills or combat strength mod).
Butters8435 on 19/9/2007 at 18:03
Stealth pistol+scope+2 range mods+upgraded pistol weapon skill = 1 headshot kills on human enemies.Plenty of available 10mm ammo makes it one of the best weapons in the game.
