I know there are tons of these on here, and they all probably get the same answer, but what the heck...
Since I refuse to buy a console - on the grounds that they're a a waste of money and any of the good games which interest me are already on the pc; i built my own computer a couple of years ago.
This month I purchased Tomb Raider Underworld and found it thoroughly unplayable - by that i mean horrible frame rates, not the bountiful bouncyness that is Miss Croft.
And since Christmas is approaching it seems like a good time to upgrade my processor and graphics card to take advantage of the sale prices etc.
Also I'm desperate to play Fallout 3 as its meant to be enjoyed...aherm.
Anyway, this is the main highlights of what I have at the moment:
XP SP3
Intel Core2 6300 @ 1.86GHz
2048 MB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 7900GT/GTO
Asus P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard
So my question is; what do you reccomend I upgrade to in terms of processor and graphics card since i guess theres enough ram there for another few years ? I have around £300 to play with and I'd like to stick to that budget if possible...ooh! a challenge! I want the usual: to be able to play games coming out the next year or so...

That gfx card is a DX9 card isn't it? Would an 8800 or 9800 series not be all you need? You could upgrade your gfx card and processor with £300 - £150ish on each.

Ooh, i like those ideas.
Whats the advantage of a Quad processor over that Duo though? I mean, theres the Q6600 isnt there?
Also whats the deal with nvidia? dont they do the best graphics cards these days? arent there tons of issues with ati? theres something called a 9600 from geforce, yeah?
how do i update my bios :(

* 90% of games out there either don't use the extra 2 cores and those that do don't show enough of an increase to justify the extra £££
* Yes your right, I forgot about the new revision of the 9800GTX, the 9800GTX+ which can be had for the same money. I suggest the following card (as its the fastest 9800GTX+)
Asus GeForce 9800 GTX+ TOP "Dark Knight" (775/1950/2360) - £163 - (

* Make a bootable floppy, then download the bios update tool that runs in DOS (Afudos BIOS update tool V2.36), then download and unpack the 2801 bios, then copy both files to the floppy. Then boot from the floppy and type " AFU236U.exe P5W-DH-Deluxe-2801.ROM " Then put the new CPU in - I suggest you get someone who knows what they are doing if you dont feel comfortable doing it.

Q6600 would be a total waste of money at this stage. It's slower than a 45nm Wolfdale dual core in most cases.

Ok, so what do you suggest?

E8500 E0 dual core, Q9450 + overclocking if you're going for a quad.

No point, this just costs more and is practically the same as the E8400 I already suggested. Its wont overclock any more than the E8400 either.
