I cannot remember the guy and I don't know for what these background images were used (although I have saved them myself) but I guess the photos are part of a cubemap thing. I believe Judith mentioned that the devs played around with them.
There's a couple of other non-used textures as well but hardly anything is useable. Some of the crossed-out textures might have been pretty.
