Sounds stupid, but did you make sure your yellow sneak icon comes up? I'm lvl 22 and I steal EVERYTHING; that is the one thing I observed when pickpocketing - if the yellow icon doesn't come up, you're scr00d. I've even picked when directly facing (although that has a good chance to fail) but it's still possible. Sneak @ 100, Agi @70.

I've found that when you really want to steal something, in a room full of people no less, all you have to do is use telekenesis then invisibility hold sneak and then take whatever you want. No one will be the wiser. This technique really comes in handy when you want to collect all of the popylon indexes.
The procedure must be done in this order though:
1 activate telekenesis (the longer the better)
2 activate invisibility
3 hold sneak
4 take the item
Unfortunately, i'm not sure if you can use this trick when trying to pickpocket. I've never tried it, my character is too noble. I've managed to collect all but two of the indexes and my sneak skill is 8. Of course i'm a battlemage so magic is no prob. i can open any door and chest with my 100 open spell. :sly:

Ohkay to clarify. My Stealth is 100, my Agi is 100. With 20-30 chameleon on I'v been able to pick:
1 Pair of shoes
1 Book
1 Gold
This was after many saves and reloads. Is picking gold really hard or something, because thats all I really want it for and It's the hardest.
So I HAVE been seccsesfull in the Pickpocketing, just barely, and supriseingly little my my level/Skills. Anyways thanks for the help guys, it helped a little

Hehe, you stole someones shoes? That would have to be the hardest thing to do ever. (in RL at least)
I'm having trouble picking the key that Habasi wants. I always get noticed.
I've been able to steal a lot more though. (including some Vampire dust from the lady with the diamond.)

I thought i have found the ultimate way to pickpocket. My characters a battlemage, and on a certain quest i needed a key that only some guards had. Anyway the only way to get it was to pickpocket, or kill the person. So I found that if you use command human spell you can pickpocket without the person being the wiser. They don't even hold a grudge or anything.
Unfortunately, there must be a bug with this technique because i could never actually keep the key. I selected take all or just the key. But it would never actually appear in my inventory. Does anyone know if there is a bug with this trick??
I eventually just had to taunt a guard into attacking me in order to loot his body.

You probably didn't get the key because the guard's are noticing you. Whenever you are noticed you don't get the item and you get attacked. Only you're not getting attacked because they are being controlled.
Not exactly the ultimate way to pick pockets if you don't get to keep anything. :p
