Physics simulation is mostly for getting physics objects to sit exactly on whatever surface you place them on. You can't always tell exactly what the collision hull of an object is like, and it's tedious to try to place it exactly right anyway. It's easier to just put a bunch of glasses a foot or two above a kitchen table and simulate their physics and get them sitting nicely on the surface, easy as that.
