Don't know. Maybe downloading has always been popular in the US.
lol
Steam was very unpopular early on. It wasn't until... I wanna say Portal and TF2's release (2007) that it started picking up momentum.

Does anyknow know (is there some info available?) whether the
boxed PC Version will be multilingual?
From the latest trailer I see that the english audio seems to be way better, but I would like the option to play in german (if I want to).
In case I go with Steam (which is quite unlike since I do not wish to do so, nor did I ever bother to buy a game online) are you typically able to switch languages or do you pay per download (=language) ?
As far as I know the German version (I ordered the one you mention) will offer the choice between German and English language. I think I've read it in a review somewhere... not sure were exaclty right now. But it wasn't long ago. ^^

I still can not even imagine
ever buying a game online.
Maybe once I retire in 20 years or so... and I can not get out of the house anymore... but not any time earlier.
It feels like you don't own it. And if Steam closes it's doors you could not even play it anymore.
Maybe that's bullshit... but I do not care.

Would be nice to know where exactly that was... because that sort of information seems to be impossible to get from a reliable source.

If you're in the USA , it's near impossible to get physical copies of pc games. I'll never forget the day I went into gamestop to ask for a pc disc of alpha protocol. the guy didn't even know that a pc version was out, let alone having it in stock.
That was when I stopped going to brick and mortar stores. A big reason why I started suporting kickstarter games is they featured collector's editions which includes physical goodd like cloth maps, art books and discs.
American retailers have basically abandoned the physical pc game retail market. heck it's easier to get a physical disc version of a game in New Zealand or some obscure eastern European country than America, because retailers there still cater to that.

Weird world.
Sounds like the industry is trying to force you into buying consoles and turn into a passive consumer and then to even pay more money for the games.
Or is it a national boycott against Microsoft?

Download-only PC games
I've come to accept it for indie games, or small "play a round/level or two" games, but anything that needs an instruction manual really should have a physical copy. I like them for reference, for artwork, and for an artifact of the adventure I had in an imaginary world. Guild Wars 2 and Warcraft/Starcraft games are the only ones I can think of that did that recently... The perk of digital distribution is that the online storefront can have mega sales a couple times a year offering 50%-75% off the full price. No brick and mortar store would stock items long enough to reach that kind of discount.
In the US, (
http://www.forbes.com/sites/oliverchiang/2010/09/20/digital-vs-physical-pc-game-downloads-surpass-retail-unit-sales-by-3m-says-survey/) digital download has been the larger share of PC game sales for several years, so I'm sure retailers just stopped stocking them in favor of higher profit margin (and harder to copy) console versions.
As for box availability in the US: (
http://community.eidosmontreal.com/blogs/Take-5-QA-6) "The Master Thief Edition is available through download only, either from Steam or other digital distribution platforms. The standard edition of Thief for PC will likewise be all digital and will not be sold on disc in North America."
In the same interview they mention "a whole line of Thief apparel, artwork and other goodies" available soon from (

Hi Guys, I was wondering if anybody are having problems in purchasing PC Thief 4 pre-order. I went to EB Games to pay for a pre order the game thief 4 for the PC console. And they told me that thief 4 was not for the PC console. :wot:
I hear rumours that anyone who wish to get Thief 4 on the PC game console we have to download the game through Stream. I hope this is not the case.:o Does anyone have any info regarding this.

Thief 4 on PC is not available in a physical box in the United States and some other countries. And even in countries that do sell physical copies, the game still uses Steam.
As a pre-emptive measure, please do not use this thread as a referendum about how much you hate Steam. That argument has been done many, many times over, and anyway this thread isn't appropriate for that.
Hope that helps.

Excuse me, I did not say I hate steam. I am not fond of it because, I live in the country and unable to get a steady line to play on steam. I have a PC game Splinter Cell conviction (hard copy) which I play on steam when I have a stable line. The reason I wish to have a hard copy Box PC game, is that if for some reason I need to re format my computer I would be able to reinstall the game That's it that's all.
thank you
