I don't know how pharaoh ants are like, but we had some days back but never had any since. It was simple, we just made a wall of salt over our house and all ants that passed.. died! BWUAHAHAHAH!

The best solution is as follows:
Ants, like many smaller animals, are sensitive to vibrations in the air and on the ground they walk on. They are sometimes covered in fine hair that helps sense their surroundings.
With this knowledge, all you need to do is throw a party every other day or so, with tremendous noise and lots of movement. With any luck, all the disturbance will make the ants see your apartment as an unsuitable location to live.
If anyone argues with you, just tell them that you are doing them a favor by removing an annoying pest at no cost to them :)

Boiling water is a good way to get rid of ants, if you can put up with the screaming when you pour it on the nest, to find the nest you just use a pile of sugar and follow the ant trail back to its source. As long as you kill the nest and the queen ant, they take a while to come back, and your cat will be a happy bunny cos nothing is stealing its food, unless you also have a racoon problem.
Or get an anteater for a pet.

I don't have the equipment to cover 7 house blocks i think. Still, worth a try :)

... and completely useless against pharaoh ants ;)

Have you tried salt that I suggested? Salt - atleast to regular ants - is like acid to ants.

Killing a small amount of workers is counter-productive as it multiplies the amount of nests. Queens must be killed - salt is unlikely to get that far.
Salt makes the problem worse.

We had pharaos once. A professional placed some poisoned food for them (couple of weeks) and they all died/went away. The guy used some liver paste for bait and some borax or something - a poison that they carry home to feed the nest. But if you're the only one doing it, forget it.
You could try cinnamon though. Normal ants won't cross a line of cinnamon powder! Please report here if you can (re-) direct pharaos with cinnamon.
