Which is basically true. A tuna fish is no less
worthy a creature than a kitten,
Just out of interest, how are you defining "worthiness" here? I take it fish are equal to mammals? But is, say, a prawn no equally worthy? Or a jellyfish? Is the dividing line at the vertebrate status? Or something else? (i hear octopuses are quite intelligent, more so than a fish?)

In discussions like this I'm always reminded of the old black guy I once saw on Johnny Carson. He talked of how hard times were and how they had a pet coon they loved but had to eat one Christmas. He said the kids were all crying as the meal was set before them. Johnny asked him did he eat. Oh yes, he was delicious. We were hungry.
We forget where we came from.

Seems that's the question raised by the SeaKitten campaign. What grounds are we using to decide the worthiness of others?
Fortunately, most "charismatic species", the pandas and tigers that sell conservation appeals, are at the pinnacle of their ecosystems and require large, contiguous ranges to survive. The “lesser” members of that habitat also benefit.
Unfortunately, cuteness is no guarantee against extinction.
