If we support the site could we get ICONs like GBM's MAXX icon?
Dark Angel on 12/3/2002 at 03:05
Thats kind of rediculus i think, most forums let everyone use those...i think just the administrators get to have them so everyone knows that they're suppose to be the special ones or something

I think that's quite a damn good idea, actually.
That way, the forums arte still free for those who do not wish to pay, but if you are willing to pay a certain amount, you now get a reward for doing so, something that they can really like, but that you wouldn't miss too much if you didn't pay.
It would be a great way to raise funds :) .

It might be a good idea in the raising of money. However, giving visible rewards to those who give money can make those who cannot afford to give anything feel bad, which is something ttlg don't want to do.
Rewards for donations where discussed a while ago amongst the staff, and, if I remember correctly, ultimatley rejected for these reasons. :) Don't get me wrong, your donations are greatly appreciated and your membership at this forum is valued, however the membership of those slighly less well off is valued exactly the same. This is a free forum, where everyone is treated equally.
I guess what I am trying to say is that Admins have said avatars aren't going to be enabled on the board, so you might as well give up all these sneaky ways to get them ;)

I agree with what Dave said. It really wouldn't be fair towards the ones that can't afford to donate. It would set the ones who can donate apart from the ones who can't in a very visible way, and might ultimately lead to disagreements and arguments between members ("Oh, yeah? Well, what have you done for TTLG? You haven't even donated anything!").
Why is everybody so fixated on getting avatars anyway? I've lost count of how many times it's been said that only the admins are going to have them, and very valid reasons for this have been stated several times. It's just a picture, for crying out loud. Get over it.
[EDIT] To clarify my point, because of the post below.
It's a simple picture, and it's not worth whining about if you can't get it.
However, if you give it as a "reward" to people who donate, it becomes more than a simple picture. It becomes a "status indicator", like a label, setting apart the people who donated from the people who didn't. As Hanse said, most members are hopefully mature enough not to make differences or gloat over this; but some people would, and it could cause problems.
Chade on 12/3/2002 at 11:33
SE, you say that its only a picture, and then try to tell us that it would set people apart???
This "only a picture" attitude is precisly why I thought the idea might work and not divide people.
Still, I suppose I can see what you mean about donating, but I'd hoped that most people would realise some members don't have the money or inclination to donate, and that's fine.
David on 12/3/2002 at 11:57
Ok, I hate to be a bit rude, but you've all been told that you are NOT getting avatars, yet you continue to bang on about it. Hearing the same old topic come up time and time again when you know the answer is going to be "no" is liable to piss the admins off more and lessen the chance of getting avatars from 0% to when GBM is Made Chancellor of Accurate Spelling in Tajakistan.
So STFU about the avatars, mmkay? :)
(this is aimed at everyone who moans about wanting avatars.)
Hanse on 12/3/2002 at 12:30
Hmmm, let's not start a flame war in the "TTLG Website Network" forum, hmmm? ;)

Yes, you would
hope that most members would realize that, and indeed, many would, however, there
are those that would flaunt their "status" as a donor and make others feel bad. I realize that those are likely in the minority, nevertheless, we'd prefer to avoid that entirely. Conversely, even if we hadn't any such "gloaters", there are those who would be uncomfortable being "labeled" a non-donor, and it's not fair to them either. Again, many probably wouldn't care. However, we try to consider
everyone's feelings when making decisions like this. It's not about the avatars per se, we discussed the idea of giving some kind of token to donors before, however immediately discounted the idea that it should be something "visible" on the forums.
That said, we've also discussed the idea of giving avatars to everyone as well. We've discussed it over and over and over again. As of right now, it's not an option. If we change our minds, you all will be the first to know. But it's unlikely that you'll be able to convince us, as we've talked about *all* the avenues already... including some that you all have likely not thought of. :)
Capiche? :)

Geez, I didn't mean to cause all this... I was not aware of all the talk about it already... This is the only forum I use.
Sorry if I caused any problems or disruptions.
