I would rather describe it as minimising useless posts. On top of that it could help to avoid the typical aggressive spiral in a thread, where every party feels compelled to have the last word.
The only time I've ever seen that happen is in threads that are already "aggressive".
Kolya on 12/10/2009 at 16:22
Yes and often the posts in such threads amount to not much more than "I read your post" with a compulsively tacked on "but I still think you are wrong/a cock/should get out".
A post acknowledgement would reduce that to "I read your post" and the rest would stay unspoken in the reader's mind like "but I don't think your spiel is even worth an answer". Functionally and psychologically it does the trick, but it doesn't give much incentive for the original poster to hack back on it.
It would be, as has been said, a bit of a showstopper, but that's indended in this case.

Well, it's not really different at all except you've got the public aspect of it front and centre. In principle it's the same idea and I approve of it.
Acknowledging a post isn't quite the same as thumbing it up or down. An acknowledgement could mean both. And that's probably for good because with the thumbing feature I would expect a lot more of the personal level fighting we already have in tags.

So... it's a way for an uncivil discussion to come to a civil conclusion.
You see the inherent contradiction here, right?
Kolya on 12/10/2009 at 16:45
You mean that the people who should use it probably wouldn't use it. I see that of course but I think that part of the driving force in this sort of aggressive discussions is not to step back and simply stop answering, as one probably should but never does, because it looks like retreating. And so far you cannot explicitly keep silent. This is a nonverbal cue this feature would accomplish.

I mentioned that approval feature in the first post and said why it's not the same.
IIRC the outcome of that other thread was everyone posting ASCII cocks.
I think I remember that thread. :p
I think ZB's right, though: usually threads become aggressive because people are actively wanting to be aggressive/stir up trouble. I doubt there would be many who would back out of an argument using this system.
I do think it would be a good idea for people who like or don't like a post but don't necessarily want to type out a response.

I would never advocate a thumbs down feature in TTLG, as that sort of negativity is not welcome and is a return to the GET OUT mentality that fucked this place for a while back in '07/'08.
That said I'd LOVE it for Facebook.

wtf

I was just playing around with ways to achieve this feature without any new code being written. Obviously there's not much one can do short of adding a new post. Nothing to see here, move on.
