This isn't so much a suggestion for a feature I actually expect to be implemented any time soon, it's just an idea I had and I want to hear what other forumers think. I'll have to start a bit theoretically:
Forum communication is lacking many of the clues that are available in face to face communication. There are lots of attempts being made to compensate for this.
But one of the main clues I think that is lacking is the possibility to show an author (and others) that you read/got his message without answering it.
By that you could acknowledge the information that's been given, instead of posting something like: "Thanks for the tip! :thumb:" or "Good work! :thumb:"
You could also show that you read the post but explicitly chose to ignore it, like: "I'm not even going to answer that! :p"
It wouldn't happen automatically because there's no way to determine if you read a specific post in a thread. Instead you would set a checkbox on a post and then appear publicly as one of the users who acknowledged this post. Ideally implemented in AJAX so you don't have to submit/reload.
The closest thing we have now is the View-counter for threads and the post approval feature that has been suggested before would seem related. But this would be a personally identifiable, not functionally judgemental acknowledgement of a specific post.
Well it's just an idea. But I think it would be quite useful.

So basicly you're proposing a system to lessen the number of posts.
In a forum.

Aren't you supposed to just quote the whole thing and add "lol i agree"?

I would rather describe it as minimising useless posts. On top of that it could help to avoid the typical aggressive spiral in a thread, where every party feels compelled to have the last word.

But then you'd be out of a job:(

Didn't we have this discussion before regarding a forum functionality to "thumbs up" a post, or rate it, or whatever. I can't remember the outcome but we did discuss it.

I mentioned that approval feature in the first post and said why it's not the same.
IIRC the outcome of that other thread was everyone posting ASCII cocks.

Well, it's not really different at all except you've got the public aspect of it front and centre. In principle it's the same idea and I approve of it.
