Downloading SS Portable if you do not own a legal copy of SS1, is just as illegal as downloading System Shock 2. It's very hard to find a legal copy of SS1, but that doesn't make downloading it legal, the copyright for SS1 has not expired yet. But for some reason, nobody here has a problem illegally downloading SS1, while illegally downloading SS2 is the worst sin you can commit over here. That always strikes me as a bit strange.
Yeah, thats basically what I thought. Reading the SS2 is Not Abandonware Sticky, 95 years means that SS1 is still protected. Irrespective if nobody would get money out of it, surly that is still technically "breaking the law", downloading SS1 is just as bad as downloading SS2.

You don't need a separate install if you use the mod manager.
What mod manager is this? I must have missed that. I looked for FM loaders and it seems that ShockLoader never really got anywhere, or I badly overlooked something.
Thanks. That is a good read.
Anyway, getting back to SS1, I haven't really gotten far, but once I got used to the controls and having no free look, and the game finally recognising my keyboard so i could actually type my name, I have to say that I am enjoying it so far. The graphics/smoothness far exceeded what I was expecting tbh, and the intro movie was really good. A nice start to the SS1 campaign.
Actually starting the first level, I was like, "This looks familiar!", although I couldn't actually put my finger on it until i went up the ramp to the recharging station. Then It clicked that the last part of Shock 2 was this, which if i had played this game first would have to admit that it was a clever little twist to have the player in SS2 return to the starting area of SS1m, Having it end where it started.
One problem though, is every time I exit SYSTEMSHOCK-portable, the dos window says something like "Thank you for Playing System Shock", and freezes. Nothing works, mouse jams on screen, and i have got to press the reset button on my computer to restart. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Yeah, don't close System Shock

Well, that sort of helps because this weekend the game will be played non stop.

Haven't heard of this problem with SS-P ever... Anyway, before you close the dos window, try re-entering the game and then quit it a second time. Close dos window.

Also, you do close System Shock with ALT+X do you ?
On my system the dos window sometimes freezes when i end the game too but it doesn't crash my whole system.

Gave that a try, still it jams

Ditto. All i get is a message saying that the program has finished and should terminate the application by closing the dos window, which thus results in the jamming.
Also, the music from the game goes crazy, like a 0.1 second loop, when the "Thanks for playing System Shock" windows shows.
Ideas anyone?
Also, Is the SS1 soundtrack avaliable for separate download, as like the SS2 soundtrack. TTLG's Shock 1 hub doesnt appear to have a complete listing. Or possibly im blind.

The tracks from the Soundtrack CD (4 of the tracks), and the original DOS Midi soundtrack are available for download at (
http://www.ttlg.com/ss1/music/) The TTLG jukebox, as are a number of fan remixes.

Yep, I'm Blind. I for some reason asumed that those were all fanmixes.
In the mean time, I'm gonna try and get SYSTEMSHOCK-portable to work. I just relised also that SSP.exe doesn't work either, never noticed that before, because i just used the cdshock.exe, although that probably has nothing to do with it.
I'm going to do a write-up for SS2, sort of like a guide similiar to those links above, but from a less-experienced perspective. I know i'm a bit late, but it could still be informative and entertaining for some people.
