I recommend new (and better) grease too - it'll help a lot.

There's one extremely odd thing that started at the same time - on another forum clicking into the reply field and pressing any key opened an "Enter the URL" field. Totally random, and I haven't found anything online what it could be, but it's exactly the synchronicity and the randomness that make me paranoid. Anyway, the heatsink and the new cooling paste will be here on Monday and I'll know soon enough if that was the problem. Otherwise... dunno.

Go buy yourself some Swiss chocolate Thirith, it'll make No PC Time more bearable.

Heh. Good idea, but not, quite in keeping with the approaching-middle-age paunch I'm developing (and fighting). ;-) Actually, I'm quite happy to spend more time reading - what annoys me about the situation is not knowing whether the new cooling unit will solve the problem or whether the problem lies elsewhere.

How about a refrigeration unit for your PC which is pedal-powered?
Play games AND defeat the paunch.

Perhaps I could get one of those Omni treadmill things, combine it with an Oculus Rift and link the whole thing to a genny that cools the processor! Every day I'd jog through Liberty City for an hour - let's say I shoot up a police car and then run away from the fuzz. No vehicles allowed, just muscle power. I'll be lean and mean in no time whatsoever!

Quick update: the new cooling unit (Corsair H80i) is in the PC and seems to be working. The weird, random problem with the PA oars persists, but I'm sure that can be solved. Thanks for all the tips to date!
