I'm novice to the boards, so forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong area.
I bought an emachines desktop pc, and for all intents and purposes, it does all of what I need it to....except install my thief games.
When I put in either installation CD, the install window comes up, I click install...either nothing happens, or the install shield window comes up, stays at 0%, and eventually closes.
I've downloaded every patch, ddfix, tafferpatcher, etc. Tafferpatcher tells me Thief is not installed, and attempts to, but it tells me my disc is corrupt, which it is not. I've got 3 thief 2 games and it does so with all of them.
I've read other post about T1 and 2 installing fine on windows 7. Most of the problems people have are AFTER it installs, so I have yet to find anyone with the same problem...
please help.

Thief 1 & 2 were built primarily for Win95/98, and sees anything more recent as Windows NT, which didn't have proper DirectX support at the time. You can force it to install with the abovelinked method.
Though it's kind of strange it isn't giving you an error message. When you try the method above, make sure you run the command prompt as an admin (hit the win key, type cmd, rightclick on the little icon that appears, and select "run as administrator" in case you don't know).
Alternately, you could make shortcut of setup.exe from the disc, rightclick it, go to properties, click the shortcut tab, and add -lgntforce at the end of the string in the target path (it'll looks something like D:\Thief2\setup.exe -lgntforce). Rightclick on your new shortcut, and click "run as administrator". If everything goes well, you'll start installing Thief 2.
Good luck. :)
