Vivian was joking about the zest.
And I must finish Mark of the Ninja.
I think I have Stealth Inc somewhere too.

Article is mostly old news. Off the top of my head, I think these claims might be new, though:
- first journalist reporting first hand experience with combat that makes combat sound very punishing.
- swoop is silent. Presumably this is how you "jump" between carpets.
- crouch is always silent.
- ambient noise reduces effect of your footsteps.
- turning off ui, focus mode, etc, is all bundled up into one old-school option.

Sounds like an amazing Thief game. True to its roots, but with a little twist of lime.

True. The core is not broken if all we have to comment on are silly things like Stephen Russell not being Garrett, contextual jumping and leaning, QTEs, 3P verticality, rope arrow hot spots, Focus, no magic, huge slo-mo metro-style inventory wheel, shroud vignette blocking our view, T-rex hands, no burricks (still), cinematic level flythroughs, loot/item glint, chatty Garrett, sticky feet, hand animations trumping precise and immediate player control, waypoint markers, checkpoint saves, cloned AI search routines and personalities, 3P takedowns, AC-inspired pickpocket/lockpick meters, mini-map HUD, XP, lockpicking recharging Focus, etc. Fans are all just being silly, really. I personally need more lime in my Thief. It tastes better; much improved. Adds a little much-needed modern day zest ;)
It's been a long road, my friend...If only they listened to the heart beat of the community and to the spirit of our words, then they wouldn't have stumbled with such tragic folly...Contemptuously, they chose to spit on everything the THIEF community holds dear, and then expect a silly smile of acceptance in return...Such a great disgrace will only bring them the infamy they rightfully deserve.

I know everyone who's been crapping their pants for years now is just going to be all 'ooh I told you so' or whatever. Well, congratulations.
Why thank you, Vivian...One can never say that you're a poor sport.

- swoop is silent.
- crouch is always silent.
This is how the player auto-defeats the "Move Silently challenge"...You know, one of the core fundamentals of THIEF.

There won't be a legitmate "old skool option".

What move silently challenge?
SlySpy on 12/8/2013 at 09:54
I assume he means the challenge of sacrificing speed for silence, something that is negated by a maneuver that allows you to dash from one area to another quickly, without any form of noise at all.
Captain Spandex on 12/8/2013 at 10:22
Didn't Tenchu Z also have that 'stealth dash' feature?
They appear to admire the game's mechanics, but I'm not sure Eidos Montréal would be satisfied with Tenchu Z's abysmal sales figures.

That would certainly make more sense than what I thought Vae meant (some silly jab at an imaginary achievement).
If it's a jab at swoop, well... it just depends how often you can do it, which EM openly admitted they were still working on.
If it's a jab at crouch being silent, we'll see. The only thing that will change is the silent speed on tiles or metal or whatever the noisiest surface is this time around. I'm open to the possibility that the change is an improvement, I'll just have to see how it plays in practice.

When even Nu-Thi4f's target audience is uttering comments like these, you know it's a full-blown disaster:

"Ask someone today to play the original Thief games, and it’s going to be a challenge to really get into its patterns before you start enjoying it"
Isn't that the point though? Isn't part of the enjoyment learning to experiment and improvise with your tools and eventually master them? Essentially learning your pattern as it were.
Also, I didn't buy Thief until a year ago, when I was one of the target audience NuThief is supposedly aiming for. But Thief didn't make me wish for more handholding, it opened my eyes to what this industry has lost over the years. It made me realise just how much I'd been missing by not playing older games and that truly rewarding gameplay was about more than flashy graphics and scripted action sequences.
Also, I don't recall ever playing Thief and thinking "this game would be perfect if only it didn't let me jump everywhere".
Random_Taffer on 12/8/2013 at 16:30
Up next: a context-jumping Mario game.
Mario, who has been through millions of platforming levels before, would know when and where to jump. It would be innate knowledge at this point. So if we allow the player to just jump around whenever they want, it really removes them from the master plumber character.
