If they want to charge $2 for a download, that download had better be worth $2. I'd pay about 25 cents for any one of the mods that they're offering right now. Really, they'd be better off spending their time fixing bugs and making expansion sets, rather than trying to sell modlets that will be upstaged by the modding community anyway. But it's their choice.

And you feel cheated for an OPTION to buy some EXTRA stuff that is completely irrelevant to the gameplay?
Eh... I personally don't feel 'cheated'(nor does any intelligent person here say they are).
I do, however, think they're joking themselves if their pioneer into the brave new territory of pay-to-mod is fuckin horse armor. It'd be like a new store opening up, and trying to sell me air. Get the fuck out with your horse armor. It's laughable and ridiculous and I doubt their profit from it will exceed all the bandwidth used on the internet laughing at them for putting horse armor.
They could do a lot of things to improve the game for $2 a pop. Things like a migration to a customizable UI similar to one in WoW, so they could just let the fanbase take their craptastic interface and make a real one.
Or perhaps the inclusion of non-leveled NPCs that are balanced around a max character. Having a character that is killable, but really high level and really hard is a HUGE increase in immersion.
But horse armor? It's like a mess up in management gave the artists a few days where they didn't have anything to do in a hotel room outside E3, so they sat down and made some bullshit no one wants as a joke. And another mishap made it the only thing they could use for a buyable mod.

Being free once was a huge high five on their part and you say thanks by demanding it for all of eternity because of their generosity.
I'm not demanding anything. I'm saying it's an ill-conceived idea. They can charge as much as they want for the smallest little morsel of added content, but I just can't imagine too many people paying two bucks for a couple sets of horse armor. What I can imagine is Bethesda, in the minds of many gamers, going from a developer that really goes the extra mile, to just another faceless corporation looking to make a buck in any way it can.

Well, this is true. They should have gone for the WOW factor. But instead of having the first mods released being amazing, they're... mediocre. Granted, the horse armor is top quality stuff, but it isn't really needed. If your horse is in that much trouble, it will probably die with or without armor.
If the first add on would have been a new quest line, then things would have gone over better, even if it was short. I'm just hoping they add new guilds. I'm unhappy with the amount offered in Oblivion, and I'd gladly pay $2 for a new guild to join.

yes, perhaps a rival thieves guild. That's my hope.

What's really funny is that the horse armor itself is a bit of a joke or 'slap in the face', if you will.
Why? Because the horse dying so easily is really a bug with the horrid way agro management works in this game. If I'm riding a horse, and see a wolf, I can get off my horse, walk towards the wolf, and the wolf will bolt passed the giant guy with a giant sword, and run and bite the horse. The horse will probably be killed by the wolf if I don't help it, but fortunately the wolf will ignore me and attack the horse(does this even happen in the wild?). If I swing at the wolf, I risk accidentally hitting the horse, and having a horse attack me.
I'm not crying about it, it's just funny that they have a pretty blatant bug in the game, and they're offering some insulation from it by having horse armor. It's like if a mob accidentally had an extra digit in his HP, so they offered a $2 mod that will give you a special bane weapon to kill it with.

If my two bucks was buying me something akin to a Durlag's Tower - that is to say, a big, meaty dungeon with an interesting backstory that's going to take me more than a day to get through - then I'd probably still bitch and whine about it, but I'd give serious thought to laying down the cash. But for horse armor? Come on.
Myoldnamebroke on 5/4/2006 at 09:05
Do you guys have any conception of the amount of money you're talking about? Yes, I know it'd add up blah blah blah blah blah. But $2? You wouldn't even get a pint for that. People saying they wouldn't pay 25c for it is just mad. 25c is what, 15p in real money? (;)) Think about what that would buy you in the real world. Pretty much nothing.
I don't fancy horse armour as I'm a thiefy assassin type, but if I was a warrior knighty type knight I'd love it.

Judging by the responses in this thread, people would happily pay if it they feel they're getting their money's worth. If Bethsoft wants to make a go of this (and I do think it is a Good Thing), they'll have to make it worth people's while.
Yeah the price point is a bit sticky, but the longer it takes to build something, the more they have to sell for it to be profitable once it hits the market. It's a balancing issue (which I suppose they're not the best with in the first place).
Regarding horses, they might tweak the AI so that it doesn't go for the horse right away every time; maybe the wolves are always hungry?

I think I would pay $2 for rideable guars ;)
I also wish that, as arch-mage, I could lift the ban on levitation, it blows.
