Especially considering that i'm in such a relationship.

Fred, Sovereign -
however. I for one would certainly NOT want to be in a relationship with someone who could be my child or with someone who could be my parent. That has far too much of paedophilia to me. :p But enough of this, to each his own, I guess.
Paul was married with Maggie Chow? I don't know what to make of this...

Yet another reason not to like him all that much. :p

Has it occurred to anyone that an outtake isn't necessarily something that got taken out, but is sometimes a joke. I don't think people are going to start making guesses about the plot of the game based on the matrix mode, so why make assumption based on that?
Z on 3/7/2003 at 01:03
True. I never intended to suggest that that conversation be considered canon plot material (since it was an outtake) but I'm not sure about comparing it to Matrix mode. I mean, that can only be accessed by typing a code on the Credits screen, and the general nature of the whole thing make it pretty obvious that it's a Easter Egg/Joke. But that conversation doesn't actually sound like a joke. That doesn't mean it isn't one, but still. The tone and wording is identical to other conversations, there isn't really anything to indicate a humourous intent.
Also, while the subject is up. Ever since I first mentioned that conv, it was nagging me, but I never got the chance to check it. I finally got around to it a week ago. I was going to provide the instructions on how to listen to it, but (again) I never got around to it. But I suppose I should do it now:
<Possible minor spoilers for Deus Ex ahead. Do not read unless you have completed the game (or if you don't care)>
NOTE: This method requires a functioning installation of the DX SDK. It can be obtained at most major DX websites, including IonStorm.com. There actually might be an easier way to do this using the ConEdit utility, but I have absolutely no idea how to work it.:erg:
CORRECTION: In my initial post, I mentioned that the conv was between JC and a member of the Luminous Path Triad. It's actually a guy from the Red Arrow. My bad.
I imagine many of you will be familiar with this, but for those who aren't:
1. Open the DX SDK.
2. To the right of the screen is the Browse window, with several drop-down boxes. Open the top-most box and select Classes.
3. With that selected, go down to the buttons at the bottom of the Browse window. Click "Load"
4. A file browser will appear. It should default to the System folder of your DX installation. If it doesn't, go there. Load the file "DeusExConAudioHK_Shared.u"
5. Return to the SDK and the Browse window. Go to the top box again and select SoundFX. Then move to the box below that one, and choose the file you just loaded.
6. You'll see a very long list of audio files. This is essentially every single piece of voice dialog for the entire Hong Kong section of the game. They are arranged in number - there doesn't appear to be any other way of classifying them.
7. Fortunately, I spent 20 minutes trawling through the whole thing to find the ones we need. Scroll down to "ConAudioHK_Shared_1480" and double-click to play. This is the beginning of that conversation. It continues up to 1492. Note that there is a "split" in the dialog where JC could say one of two different lines. This depends on whether Paul is alive at that time.
Well, that's it. Everyone can make their own judgements. Personally, I don't think it's a joke, but it definately didn't make it into the actual game, so it probably isn't canon. At the very least it's interesting trivia.
Hope that helps.
Z

I have listened to it now. I believe it is an authentic conversation. What made me think it was a fake was that the Luminous Path would not have said that about Maggie, but because it was the Red Arrow I have no problem believing it. I still think that Maggie is not married to Paul, but I think the conversation is authentic.
By the way, how do you get the .con files out of the .u file? They have notes and such on them.

I think the design team must have tinkered with a different story and changed thier minds at the last second.
In Hong Kong Canal, in the Red something-or-another bar (behind it is a kitchen and ice room), you can speak to two people who get you confused with Paul. One wants to sell you stuff, but another is a drunk guy who says that "you are the American who helped the Red Arrow steal the sword." Must have been a referance they left in thinking people would dismiss it as drunk talk.
Go and see for yourself.

-- j0ker Listen people you have to differentiate between The Red Arrow Triad and the Luminous Path Triad if we are going to talk about this. The Luminous Path is allied with Paul, they don't lie to you. The Red Arrow is allied with Maggie, the do lie to you at times. For example they might lie to you and say that Maggie was married to Paul (which is what I think the removed conversation was.)
So when the drunk in the bar says, "You are the spy, you helped the Luminous Path steal the sword, Miss Chow warned us about you," it is worth knowing that he said Luminous Path and not Red Arrow. For one it tells you that Paul was not on the side of the Red Arrow, and another thing to know is that Maggie was
not on Paul's side. It is useful information to have before you go and listen to Maggie lie.
[Edit] Oh forgot to mention it also means that Maggie isn't married ("Miss Chow.")
Also I don't see how these two conversations would imply a diffrent story idea. The one guy you can get blueprints and such from, the other you get that conversation from.
