Macca's reputation has been on a discernable upswing these past few years, and rightly so.
His last 3 (or so) records have actually been proper brilliant, despite probably not getting the attention they deserve, and the Glasto performance probably helped a lot.
John wrote most of A Day in the Life though, so stop the hating.
They were all brill :D.
edit - What's the general US take on this btw? In the UK Macca/Lennon are basically both regarded as genii of pretty much equal standing (ish). I get the feeling from reading American stuff that Lennon is usually more highly regarded though. This is a shame if true, but I may just be reading the wrong stuff.

I think Paul has been doing some great solo stuff for awhile. The records he did (with Youth) using the name Fireman were also very good. I don't know if I'd rate him higher than John though. Part of what made the Beatles great was 4 really talented individuals coming together as a group and while 3 of them were great solo musicians I don't think they ever came close to their output as a band.
On a side note, I don't know why people hate on Yoko so much, unless it's just because most people don't actually know anything about her (other than LOL OMG SHE BROKED UP TEH BEETLES N CANT SING HAHA LOL).

I think that here in North America John is generally considered the better one, but I'm getting that mostly from tv, and to be honest I don't really know much about the Beatles.

Paul was great. Although to be fair, some of my favorite songs wernt written by him, although in pure volume he still reigns supreme. But then again, its all beatles. Hey jude is a great song, the whole album is great. For some reason, old brown shoe has seemed much more awesome than usual to me lately, not sure why but that song is great for a reason I cant quite figure.
As far as who's better, I dont know that Ive seen much sentiment about it. I think the beatles and both paul and john are very well respected, I dont know that anyone bothers to argue who was better. John was kind of the activist and played a big part in protesting in america, so maybe that leads the hippies to favor him, all I know is my mom is a (former) hippy and she likes paul.

I think most of the McCartney V. Lennon (more like McCarthy V. Lenin) debate is centred on the types of songs they made, and not their overall talent as singer-songwriters.
Paul, while obviously a very fine musician and composer and songwriter, typically used his talents for more sugary pop fluff and lullabies (at least during The Beatles years, I've not really listened to any of his other stuff). John, on the other hand, was clearly much more experimental and political with his music, and politics + experimentation = ++music snob points.

Paul + John were greater than the sum of their parts IMO. On a vague general level. Coincidentally (or not, I don't know) my favorites were those written by George or Ringo.
Solo, the only one I really like is George.
