I'm in the Agroprom undergrounds now, but I didn't stay long enough in Garbage to check out the respawning. But I did notice that nothing has changed in the car park where you have to protect Bes; no time to loot bodies before more bandits arrive.
But this patch wasn't supposed to change that...

Anyway, Bardak's patch sounds good. Will my savegames keep their sanity after installing it?
Yes.

I was upgrading from 1.0001, hoping the developers had done something about this obvious problem, but apparently nothing has happened in 1.0003 nor 4. Let's just say that I'm very disappointed in the progress to fix the game's problems. The community seems to do a much better job.
Well, I guess it's time to grab Bardak's fix and read a tweakguide.

I'm wondering if something is wrong with my system, since one would think a 7900 GTX, 2 GBs of memory, an A64 X2 ~2.2 GHz and a X-Fi would handle that game comfortably at max settings @ 1280 x 1024, no AA or AF.
I think the stalker engine is just a bit crap to be honest. It can do quite a lot of things but in terms of performance it is pretty poor.

I hope they'll do more optimizations for the 1.1 release, and maybe reduce the lies in the changelog.

At least things do look natural with this engine, thanks god not all modern games include maps made of plastic, soused in oil, and lit by Xmas lights :)

You mean respawn rate? But it was fixed in 1.0003 - pre 1.0003 respawn was definitely worse. Some areas like Garbage are still quite popular amongst bandits of course, but then again with low respawn in such areas they'll become boring.

Agroprom has good respawning balance, but it is still pretty popular, especially the area where you meet Mole.
I experienced a bug there by the way. I saved Mole, talked to him and he showed me the entrance to the underground area. But when I returned to Mole's location after dealing with the military outpost, I suddenly saw "Task failed: Save Mole", apparently the game didn't register that I saved the guy earlier, he got killed by a second wave of bandits. After giving those bastards hell, I found Mole's body and I retrieved info about Strelok's stash when I "opened" the body, which I believe was supposed to happen before I went underground, since the stash is there.
Something fishy is going on with that quest. :o

The quest completion trigger is poorly placed, I've had this before and it's quite easy to go into the sewers after he's talked to you but without stepping on the trigger, just be sure to run around a bit when you get to the manhole.

i started a new game under 1.0004 and can't see any bandit spawn problems. I'm at lab18 or 16 right now and the only problem I have are the extremely dark shadows of Float32 Rev.D which force me to fight in the day and hide in the night. at least till I get a decent nightvision ;)

That explains it.
But I experienced some new spawn problems. In the bandit base in Dark Valley I had a bandit spawning right next to me when I loaded a savegame. And the strange thing is that it happens again and again as long as I save in that area. If I run into another place and save, no one will spawn upon savegame load.
And this also happened in lab X18 after I grab the documents, but in this case it was more irritating because the bastards have ridiculously good armor, making it a pain to kill them quickly enough.
