Yep, even on a new game it still looks like that and CTDs.

ok,are other 3dgames working fine? have you tried running thief1? have you tried disabling your antivirus/firewall? I'm starting to run out of ideas here..maybe the data are getting corrupted during the install,if you have some other computer nearby, you should try to repeat the install procedure there,to see if you get a similar (bad) result.

Other 3D games work just fine and Thief Gold works great too and I have tried disabling the firewall as well.

one last idea-install t2 on some other pc,set it up (ddfix, correct resolution in cam.cfg etc),make sure it is working ok,and copy the entire thief2 folder to your pc (to the same location,to ensure all paths will work).

I had the same problem. At first I also used ddfix directly for widescreen resolutions and my game looked just like the screenshot you posted. Even more so, it crashed when I moved an inch. Once I made a clean ddfix install (with the gui) after the 1.18 patch and then used the widescreen patch the graphics looked alright and the crash bug went away. Strange thing is that the widescreen patch complained about me not feeding it the correct exe, still it worked.

Well looks like I fixed it. It just didn't like 1680x1050 for some reason and when I tried 1280x720 it worked. Strange.

Could be because DDFixed Thief can only handle 16:9 ratio on your monitor. (1280:720 is 16:9 whilst 1680:1050 is 16:10.)
My setup (23" widescreen) runs Thief OK at 1280:720 but it doesn't like 1280:768. It's also OK at 1440:900.
