Ok, having at last upgraded my pc into a decent gaming machine, and patching my original version of Stalker to 1.004, the difference is amazing. Really enjoying replaying it, stashes are removed from the map once you get them, better quests etc. One thing though, does the patch change the armour degradation, cos I got the merc suit hidden in the beginning village, and after only a few gunfights I am already down from 30% to 26%. Any way to repair this, or you just have to keep getting fresh suits?

Unless you get a repair mod, no. You'll have to buy/find new suits to replace your battle-worn ones.

bah, I feared as much. Ah well at least its a good motivation to collect as much loot as you can, to get the cash to afford armour.

If you look hard enough you'll never need to buy armour. A number of quests give out some of the best suits as rewards, added to that most areas have a couple of decent armours knocking about and if you're thorough in checking the stashes you locate, then you'll never be short of spare suits (Unless you go out of your way to get shot up).

which part of the game are you talking about, in my original run-through, I got past the Yantar lab, and was into the Army warehouses area, didnt really find a lot of armour at all, just was using the suit the scientist guy in Yantar had.
What I mean to say is the only decent suits I found were being sold by various traders.

There are several optional quests that will reward you with good suits. For instance, if you perform the 'Bring the unique bodysuit' mission for Sakharov, he will give you a SSP-99M suit (the green one). Or you can also get a SEVA suit from him, if you complete the mission to bring him a Sea Urchin artifact. This last mission is one that you can perform several times, at regular intervals (you'll have to do all the missions to get him artifacts until this one comes up though).
More missions that will reward you with suits:
-Bring the Night Star artifact to Barkeep: Beril-5M Armoured Suit;
-Bring the bulletproof vest (it's the suit you find in Yantar, near the entrance to X16) to Lukash: Guardian of Freedom Suit;
-Find the Night Star artifact for Sidorovich (this mission is only available after X18): Tourist Suit (which will let you carry up to 70Kg);
-Kill the stalker from Freedom for Petrenko: PSZ-9Md Universal Protection suit;
-Get the grenade launcher for Voronin: PSZ-9Md Universal Protection suit;
Plus, you'll find several other suits, some of them unique, in stashes.
I actually prefer to play with the Repair mod installed. When I get interesting weapons or suits, I prefer to be able to repair them and keep having fun, instead of having to get rid of them after a short while.

Bardak's bugfix attempt is very old. It's been superseded by ZRP - Zone Reclamation Project (which incorporates Bardak's patch). ZRP is a purist patch whose only aim is to fix bugs.
ZRP is compatible with 1.0004 and 1.0005.

The trouble with those night star quests is I've only ever found night stars in Pripyat.
There's a freedom suit of some sort in the house at the farm next to the army warehouses, and there's stalker suits and merc suits lying around in wild territory from memory.

You should check Agroprom in the evening then. Particularly that one corner with killer radiation. There are usually at least two of them in there. Also, you get a Night Star as a reward for killing a stalker in a mission for Baldy (he's inside the bar).

Off the top of my head. These are just the ones laying about, I'm not including the ones you get as rewards as D'arcy already covered those.
Free armour (Some story spoilers):
Rookie village Merc Armour: Everyone knows this one.
Cordon Perfected suit: In the tunnel past the 'car park' where you rescue Nimble (Needed for quest in Rookie village).
Lab X18 Monolith suit: First floor locker room. Search all the lockers.
Wild Territory Stalker suit: Going from the Bar, enter the enclosed 'corridor' area and go up the ladder at the end instead of going out the hole in the wall. At the end of the walkway there's a Stalker suit laying there.
Wild Territory Freedom suit: Coming from Yantar, go throuigh the burner anomoly tunnel, up the slope, turn right, then left. A trailer is in front of you, go round to the entrance. Armour is inside.
Yantar Custom Military: On a corpse in the industrial area above lab X16 (Needed for a quest in Military Warehouses)
Lab X16 Military armour: By the second flight of stairs when you're turning off the Brain Burner.
Lab X16 Custom Stalker suit: On Ghost's corpse. (Needed for quest in Yantar).
Military Warehouses Freedom suit: Crazy Staker shaked up in the hut by the swamp surrounded by landmines. Suit is in hut.
Military Warehouses Freedom suit: Farm houses where the Duty team hang out near the exit to the Bar.
Red Forest Duty armour: First sniper you come across (The one on top of a trailer). Climb up the ladder and the armour is laying next to him.
Red Forest: Military vest(?): Follow the road all the way to the blockade where the RPG soldier is. Cross the blockade and there's a trailer infront of you. Armour is inside.
Pripyat Supah Military armour(?): Hotel room where the decoder is.
NPP Exoskeleton armour: Corridor where you need to use the decoder. Subsequent corridors after the decoder and several laying about outside when you're doing the 'Fight the system' ending.
I'm sure there are many more, but I can't recall them (Or haven't found them). Still, coupled with the ones you get as rewards and those found in stashes, you should never be short of decent armour unless you've been tap-dancing in front of Spetznaz.
