Just got back from seeing this movie.
Wow.
I had heard a few good things, and from the name I had assumed it would have some pagan stuff in it, but I thought it was probably a fairy tale kids movie kind of thing.
Not. So.
I wont talk about the story at all, just suffice to say it was a great movie. It had some harsh incredibly violent moments and some excellent scenery, as well as some very surreal and for a few parts, fucked up pagan/mythical stuff.
It also had a strong real world story going on at the same time, very good I must say.
I thought I would post this just in case people (like I) thought it was somewhat of a kids movie or somthing and hadnt seen it because of that. Dont take your kids.

Er, wouldn't taking kids be kind of difficult? The film is rated MA (15+) over here, I doubt it'd be rated any less in the US.
Anyway, this made the top of quite a few people's lists for the best movie of 2006, I haven't gotten around to it yet. I loved The Devil's Backbone so I know I'll probably like this. We might be getting out to the cinema later this week, so maybe this will be the movie of choice... or maybe not, depends on my wife's mood. ;)

I just saw the movie last week, and while it was very good, I'm torn between it and Children of Men for which I like better. Both remind me of each other in terms of shooting style and visuals (at least the real world aspects), and both have similarly dark stories. I think I enjoyed Children of Men more, but that might be because the theater I saw Pan's Labyrinth in did not correctly center the film on screen, and parts of the dialog was missing at places (as I do not speak Spanish and was completely unaware the movie was in a foreign language, this is another problem entirely).
But I must agree with Bear, it was an extremely well done movie, but the general perception I had upon entering that it would be suitable for children did not hold up long at all after the film started.

If someone put a gun to my head and made me choose, I'd say Children of Men was better, but I love Pan's Labyrinth to death as well, and I'm fairly certain it's a film that keeps getting better the more times you see it, since I liked it more, and found it more emotionally affecting the second time around.

there is def something wrong here, everyone so far has agreed that this is a good movie. so although i have not seen it, I say it really is trash. (based on the commercial)

Hang on a mo, kids can still attend films rated MA in Australia, they just need an adult accompanying them if they are under 15. It's rated R in the US, but that just means the child in question needs an adult if they are under 17 years of age.

I stopped judging a book by its cover a long time ago concerning movies. I hate all the new horror/thriller movies that have come out since Ring. The trailers show you the most suspenseful and/or best parts of the movie. I wait to see a movie when I hear about 2 or 3 people I know say that it was really good.
