point 1 solved, just Detach/Attach Element under the Modifier List, then assign it two differents textures, when the elements are detached. :)

There is a simpler way, outlined on the wiki on this (
http://www.ttlg.com/wiki/index.php?title=Custom_Static_Meshes) page (see especially the note I added after the explanation of multi sub object materials)
First you create your ion shaders in seperate materials slots. Then, with your object selected, you should go into sub-object mode in max, and select the faces you want to apply a different material to, then hit the apply material button in the material browser. This will apply the currect material to just the polys you selected.

Did you click the blue and white checkered cube when you are on the Parameters page of the Material editor?

You need to have the "show map" button pressed, but only in the Ion Shader (which I think is a pink/white checked box, rather than blue/white). If you turn it on in the standard material or multimaterial level above that, it doesn't show.
