I think the most overrated band of the past 15 years is Radiohead, as much as I respect what they do. They're Oasis with more obscure source material.
FINALLY
SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS

In Rainbows makes up for everything else.

Radiohead is a head scratcher for me too. They have a few great songs, but everyone seems to think they're the second coming of Christ. Then again, I listen to Dream Theater thirty years later, so what the fuck do I know?

Hmm. Given what else is around, I can quite easily see how Radiohead have deservingly or not become so venerated as an intelligent, boundary-pushing band. But the frothy arselicking of the music press is completely out of proportion... they go into spasms of ecstasy every time the skanky-eyed little fucker lifts his little finger.
I'll toss Damien Hirst on the pile.

At least they've moved on as band. Oasis, how on earth they still have such a strong following? They're making such ludicrously average guitar-pop that it's silly. I guess it's a Brit thing?

Well, to look for something that might even be objective in some way, we should look at their career and musical evolution. Picking The Bends, Kid A and In Rainbows for example shows their music style and experimentation spans so widely it's quite unmatched from the currently active bands.
They are overhyped by media for sure. Pitchfork being the worst.

Steve Miller Band fucking sucks, Mr. Miller might be a master of reinvention, but he's still a hack.
Also fuck Jane's Addiction. Perry Farrell's god awful high-pitched screeching makes Cobain's cat-in-pain singing voice seem like an angelic choir.

do you hate Flight of the Conchords because you're from New Zealand and you think they project a bad image?
I heard australians hate Steve Irwin for that reason (although they all seemed to like him fine after he died...)

I think you misunderstand what I was trying to say. Oasis are panned because they're basically a tribute band to whichever British invasion band they feel like ripping off at any given time. Radiohead is the same way, they just choose to do it with progrock. What they're doing isn't much different than Stereolab, who are a personal favorite, except that Stereolab stay a little more true to the source material instead of fagging it up with top-40 britpop-isms. My favorite Radiohead song, "Knives Out", is great, but it's also basically Ege Bamyasi with an annoying singer. You can play the same game with pretty much everything they've done since OK Computer.
The weird thing is, if it weren't for the whiny, effeminate vocals I think Radiohead would possibly be one of my favorite bands, because their influences tend to be stuff that I rate very highly.

Fuck the new Jane's Addiction. On the other hand, I can't think of 10 records from the late 80's that were better than Nothing's Shocking, although I suppose it helps that popular music in the late 80's was a fucking cesspool.
