Overclocking RAM. Is it worth it? - by SubJeff

I've got this:
Core2Duo E6600, 2.4GHz
3Gb RAM
nVidia 8800GTS 320Mb
ASUS P5N-E mobo
I was toying with the idea of getting a GTX 260 896MB card but then I though, would overclocking this set up be any good? I thought I'd start with the RAM as I've never overclocked anything before and I know my gfx card isn't going to get better anyway. It hasn't given problems in games with the res I use (1680x1050 usually) but sometimes windows explorer and browsers and whatnot are slow to open and I figured this isn't a gfx card thing.
Anyways, tips on OCing RAM? Pointers to good guides?

Try (
www.overclockers.com). As for the slow computer, check the Services that are running (there are probably some you can do without -Start>run>services.msc or Administrative tools>Services), and the usual defrag and choices for CPU use on applications. (
www.tweakxp.com) might also have some suggestions to speed you up.
I doubt it is your Vcard. But as I recall, you can set some CPUs or cards for "Performance" or "Quality".

First tell us what exactly your RAM is. "3Gb RAM" is utterly non-descript (and it's GB, BTW - Gb = Gigabits). For example, I'm running 2x2GB DDR2-1000 (aka DDR2 PC2-8000). The easiest way to OC RAM is to increase the multiplier (and of course, the voltage slightly as well).
Your motherboard was quite a popular model, you should be able to easily find an OC'ing guide through Google.
Your CPU should be OC'ale to at least 3GHz minimum. First off you should disable C1E and EIST technologies in your BIOS setup. I also recommend dumping the rubbish Intel stock cooler in favour for a superior after-market solution. Zalman coolers are quiet and efficient, I highly recommend that brand.

I have Vista so tweakXP is not for me. TweakVista trial is nonsense (it can't find any info at all, v.poor) but there must be some other Vista tweaking stuff/sites.
I don't remember what my RAM is Evaunit. Where do I get the info? Can't find it on dxdiag or on Control Panel anywhere.

Download and run CPU-Z. It should be listed on the SPD tab.

Nice program, thanks.
Its DDR2 PC2-6400 (400MHz) Corsair ram. 4 gigs, not 3.

Okay. In the BIOS setup try increasing the multiplier to 500MHz and the DRAM voltage to 2.1V. Then run Memtest86+ overnight.
