I did ask them for permission to distribute their textures in a pack, and they were positive and helpful. However, these were only 256x256 textures, so larger ones may be a different issue.

I've just now sent an email their way asking how exactly I'm allowed to distribute my rather largish textures. Lets see what they say.

Got an official response.

Hi Matt,
I don't allow redistribution of textures by themselves or in texture packs (not even when the textures are modified). Only when bundled with a 3D model, map or game is it ok to redistribute them.
This might seem a bit harsh, but if I would allow redistribution of modified textures then anybody could start selling my textures after minor modifications. It's not possible to define when a texture would be sufficiently modified to allow for resale, and most people will think tiling a texture is enough to start selling it (this happens a lot on Second Life for example). To avoid any confusion I do not allow any redistribution or resale as textures at all. Unfortunately I don't make exceptions to this rule, it would be too confusing.
Sorry to dissapoint you!
Kind regards,
Marcel Vijfwinkel

Bleh. A bit disappointing, but he does have a point. Even though I usually hack the everliving hell out of everything I grab nowadays, most of my sources are grabbed off his site, and are ultimately bound by his rules. I guess from here on out, I'll have to start producing TDM/TDS beauty maps if I want to release anything culled from CGTextures. :(
Or, alternately, I can follow Beleg's example and start taking my own photo sources. That'd be the best thing to do, really. Since then I'd have complete ownership and control of everything I do from top to bottom. Only problem is, CGTextures' stuff is SO DAMN GOOD, and it has such a huge amount of variety. It'll be hard to replace them completely.

Hm. Unfortunate, but at least he put no restrictions on using textures in maps - which also means someone may find something in a map he or she likes, and use it in a personal work. That's not bad.
Renzatic on 30/10/2009 at 22:08
Right. It's a relatively reasonable request, and not too horribly restrictive. Still, it pretty much nixes my comfy role as the guy who makes texture maps, and does nothing else.
I might actually have to do work now. :(

Oh wow! Then you are a winner of some competitions?!

Just a heads up to the occasional few of you who show up here who's all stoked about doing TDM/TDS textures. Like I promised, I've got a nice little tutorial in the wings on how I went from..

...which has been combined with another texture I just got through with so I could have some variety. The time I spent doing this texture was roughly 3-4 hours. About 45 minutes for the base (I'm really anal retentive about my stuff. Most people could do that same texture in like 5 minutes), and about a couple-three hours for the modelling, exporting, painting, and combining.
I'm doing all my pictures now, and am rough drafting the final. For anyone who's interested, I should have it up tomorrow or Monday.

Nicely done! But I think you could have used Mudbox to get those details out of the reference picture (digital sculpting) and then bake AO and normals onto simple plane in Max or Modo. It would have saved you a lot of time.

You've done that frill by yourself, or there was already the texture?
Melan on 1/11/2009 at 08:48
That's a good thing, Renzatic, because I have that texture myself, and like it a lot (I got a good 30-40 useable textures or thereabout from that Indian series on CGTextures - I will still need to tile some of them). Looking forward to reading your tutorial! :thumb:
