Think of your fine details as your highs, and your vague, broad details as your lows. Everything between those are your midranges. Like Judith's go at the texture, he struck a good balance by bringing out his high details without them being overbearing, and the lows are just there enough to give you the impression of an uneven surface. You should try and aim for something similar.
Course it still came out kind of spongy simply because the diffuse is too unevenly lit to convert to a good bumpmap. What I'd do is paint out everything cept your trim and flower designs with black, desaturate and normalmap that, then use the texture you're doing now for detailing.

Now you're on the right track. The only thing you're missing is using a direct pass normal to get your fine details back in. Just to show you what I mean, I went ahead and made a normal out of your mask, and overlaid Judith's normal on top of it. This is what I got:

http://users.chartertn.net/greymatt/floral_sphere.jpgYou got the crispness, and all the edges popping up like they should without the lumpy look.
As for it taking awhile...well...you get alot faster the more you get used it. Once you have a good workflow down, you can plow through easier textures in no time.
And that crab trim? Yeah. You'd have to model it. There's no other way around it.

I think the first one is OK, imo. It looks very good. VEERY nice frill!!

You've tried superimposing the two and blending them to create a variation that's closest to what you want?
Not that I know what I'm talking about, here.:laff:
LOL
But ... WAIT!! This is supposed to be the Dark Mod? Whatta hell are doing this here? Am I missing something?
And what the hell means "Classical Master 2008" :wot: You are a professionist?

What's the problem with sharing our knowledge with someone who needs help, regardless of the engine used? I don't see any, and I hope Melan stays here as long as he/she wants.

Well, yeah. I asked here because I saw people discussing the topic, and the principles are identical. I'm sure someone who wishes to create textures for T3 may find this discussion useful. I'm also willing to share my results, although I can't distribute textures without permission from CGTextures, where I got the base images.

Wuh? Where'd you get that idea? Their license says nothing at all about having to gain permission for distribution. Read it again, specifically this part...

CONDITIONS OF USE
Use of the Textures is only allowed under one or more of the following conditions:
- Private or commercial use
- Use in 2D or 3D computer graphics, movies and printed media
- Incorporation in computer games, 3D models
- Selling 3D models bundled with modified versions of the textures, when the texture is customized for the 3D model
It is NOT permitted to:
- Sell or distribute any of these textures in an unmodified form, or where the derived product you are selling or distributing is a Texture or a collection of Textures. IN OTHER WORDS: Do not sell or distribute any of these textures (modified or not) by itself or in a texture or scrapbooking pack!
- Interfere with the security or otherwise abuse, disrupt, place excessive loads on, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the CGTextures website or any system resources or networks connected to this website.
- Stockpile images with the goal of making a local copy of all textures on the site.
- Using a special program (spider, leecher) or script to automatically download all Textures on the CGTextures website. Users who try to mass download will be banned from the website automatically.
- bundle the images with software such as paint programs, 3D programs, photo-kiosk software.
That's a pretty open set of conditions. Basically saying you can hand out modified versions of their textures freely, and even sell them so long as they're bundled and properly UVed along with a model and you credit them with the original source. The only thing you can't do is download their textures straight up and distribute them unedited elsewhere. Even if you've just done a quick tile job, that's considered edited and you're allowed to do whatever you want with them.
So go ahead and upload em if you want. :P

I drew my conclusions from this paragraph:
Quote:

Doesn't this include modifications? Granted, if it is allowed, I will distribute away.

That's strikes me more as a "covering our asses" clause. Considering they've already given you permission for use in 3D graphics and games, and the intended audience is rather focused rather than the Internet At Large, I'd say...more than likely...you're safe.
You can fire an email their way just to make sure. But I'm gonna say we're pretty much in the clear here.
Edit: Now that I think about it, I might actually be in the wrong here. The TDS crew is fine, since they usually offer up their textures packed in a .utx file meant for a specific game. On the other hand, I offer up raw TGAs that can be used on a variety of platforms...which might be considered against their terms of use. I might have to start packing them in a .pk4 and write material files to get back in line with things.
Hell, now you got me wanting to write an email. :P
