you can turn off popups per game in properties -> general -> untick: enable steam-community ingame
that is the only way to not get any achievement popups.

My preload is downloading, sorta. Sloooowww..... I'll be lucky to be playing by tomorrow night. :(
I'm very psyched for this game and anxious to see in particular how stealth and the Thieves Guild/Dark Brotherhood portions of the game are delivered, but (
http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/11/skyrim-infinite-quests/) THIS little snipet I read kinda scares me. Infinite quests? Sounds like ugly potential for WoW-like boring ass fetch and retrieve mania.
I have to say, I
do want a lot of quests, but I
don't want infinite quests. I mean, all games and scenarios within should have a proper ending, right?

Infinite random quests aren't uncommon. In all of the games I've played that have them I never felt any obligation to do those quests. It was just "hey I need some extra gold, rather than grinding randomly I'll do a random quest or two." Finishing the game still felt like finishing the game.
The way Skyrim is doing them does sound interesting though, as they're exploration aids, scanning for things you haven't done and inventing reasons for you to do them.

There's one thing that gets me, though. If I read this right, Skyrim's random quests are given by NPCs which are chosen dynamically by the "Radiant story" mechanisms. But this implies it happens with a voice-over, doesn't it? It's not like the game randomly generates a quest for you and sticks it on the town's bulletin board. So I'm really curious to see how they handle it, do they just have an NPC spout some generic and completely non-specific dialogue to indicate they have a quest to offer and then it's all text-based, or do they just randomly put in some vaguely specific quest dialogue even at the risk of doing it in a different voice than the NPC's original one, or something else entirely?

Possibly, I don't think they use specific names in the dialogue, but more like "I need you to fetch something for me, I'll mark the location on your map" which makes it extremely generic.
I'm definitely interesting in the modding aspect of it, since the system could be infinitely expanded with multiples of plugins layered on top of eachother, sans the voice acting though.

Well, I guess most of you are gonna find out by the time the weekend's over. My copy's coming tomorrow, supposedly, but I'm pondering putting off playing it for a week or two for the initial patch(es) to come out.
Digital Nightfall on 10/11/2011 at 10:15
My copy won't be here until Tuesday, thanks to the holiday weekend. But then I leave for a brief vacation on Wednesday, so I probably won't be doing any Skyrimming until I get back next Tuesday. Ah well.

Fucking steamworks is all I say. I have the physical copy right here, but it won't let me install it. It shouldn't be my problem that they can't send stuff in correct date.

I was weak. I succumbed to the dragon and ordered the Collector's Edition. They claim it's going to be delivered tomorrow.
Now to distract myself until then.
