I have been playing RPG's sense I was 9 years old. I started out on the consoles, and later move to the computer. The first computer RPG I really played was the Ultima games. Then I played Diablo, and later Ultima Online.
I guess it was UO that got me into MMORPGS. I then went to Everquest (Was in the beta) and then into Asherons Call. The online thing really got me. I quit UO because of the Pking. I have been waiting for the new MMORPG's, and have read all about them. Every single one of them has open PvP. I frankly do not understand at what point RPG became "Frag". I have nothing to look forward to in the next couples of years except single player games. *Sighs* I love playing with my husband, side by side, defeating evil.
What I would like to know is why developers are placing "Death Match" and "PvP" in RPG games. It really has no place. Only 1% of all PK's I have ever met even know how to role play a villan. Most PK or PvP to blow off steam. And that, IMO is not what RPG's are all about. Quake, Unreal T and such are there for people to "Blow off Steam" in. (I know because I am an avid Quake/UT/Half-Life Counter Strike gamer to ;P)
I feel that this "New Generation" has blended FPS into RPG's, and lost the concept of Role playing along the way. And it it a great dissappointment.
If Ultima Underworlds were coop, and I could increase the Resolution to get rid of the pixelization, I would never buy another computer game ever again.

UO bears the name Ultima, but doesn't live up to the standard of RPG that U7 still holds the record for. I guess they figure they can get more people if they include mindless killing as opposed to forcing them to actually play the game and role play a character. Hell, every PK i've run into is a l337 h4X0r, or, as they're better known, Ass Holes! Yes, those beloved jerks who like to ruin yourlife only because you were born, have found a place in the Net in every goddamn MMorpg as mindless murderers, who, if they acted like that in a real RPG, let alone real life, would be hunted down by every federal agency known. Damnit, there should be serious punishment for being a PK, something besides banning them from towns, then they create another character to use as a mule. End Rant
yeah, they've lost the concept of RPG along the way, I had high hopes for UO and every other MMORPG i've played, and have been dissapointed every time.
I'm one of those guys who hates sensless PKing, and that's just about every PK in existence. I'm also one of those guys who mercilessly hunts down PK's and constantly lobbies GM's for thougher punishment for PK's. I'd much rather RP a Lawfull Good character who doesn't have to become a bounty hunter to avenge his last 20 best friends deaths.

How about a MMORPG set in Sigil, from the AD&D setting, Planescape? If you PK, the Lady of Pain comes and chops you into little bits.
