Took a while but, here I am.

Jesus the original just devastates the cover. Why even bother.
Damn straight. I was like "that Miller band song is a cover? Well I never liked it anyway, how good can the original be?". But I don't want the damn thing to end. It gets to that last verse and I'm like \O/ there's more! Great blues-rock tune.
The story behind it is so damn tragic too. At least the proceeds from the cover kept him pretty comfortable
Yours are pretty easy for my money; you can't crunch up Whiskey in the Jar, that just doesn't make any sense. And Nina Simone, well.... That said I think the cover is pretty good and Muse seem wise enough to know when they're licked.
Here's a couple of interesting ones:

(uploaded this one meself since I couldn't find it. High quality is nice.)

Ok, university was a while ago and I'm nowhere near a cafe right now or a seedy bong smoke filled flop house in the middle of the night, so arguing the relative merits of Tom Waits is completely gauche as far as I'm concerned.
I thought the Original/Cover game sounded amusing (what with Youtube being the world's on demand radio station these days.)
The man has been making music for over three decades, what does being in university have to do with anything. Going by the crowd that was at his concert last summer in Prague, nothing.
Or perhaps i am completely misreading your post, then in that case, i apologize.
