I've been a long-time fan of the Thief series, but never considered the origins of the various undead enemies that are encountered in the trilogy. Is there any sort of in-universe explanation for the presence of the undead? I've read through the various notes found throughout the games, but could not come to any sort of conclusion. I'm just curious to see if this has ever been addressed in the canon.

that is a great question and i can answer it
thief use to be a more magic based game/mages/pagan/hammer/mech magic
so magic is the cause probably from the mages in thief gold
but in thief 2 they were getting away from that

I believe haunts are all dead Hammerites who either weren't buried properly or have had their rest disturbed. Apparitions I don't think are ever explained (maybe they're similar to haunts?), and I know zombies can be resurrected by Pagan magic, but I don't know if that's always the case.

I've always wondered, when you consider that soft tissues rot away, and haunts are near skeleton level, how do their joints hold together?
Same thing goes for skeletons in other games (Oblivion, Skyrim, &c). Unless it's pure magical energy?

funny thing is the down winders are only guild without magic

Aren't apparitions just haunts after their flesh and bones have completely decayed and fallen off?
