On another note, why are the original Thief games listed as being in different "eras"? Aren't they all set a couple of months apart? By the time of TDS, most of the Mechanist changes are gone. Surely an "era" has to be more than and last longer than a passing fad? :)

Karras's revolution was a kind of play off the Reformation, and in our own history you'd say that the medieval and Reformation periods were different eras (not to mention the Victorian vibe it added, which was a period of time still further away), and there's a kind of dramatic compression of time for plot reasons, but it represents two distinct cultures and aesthetics going on, so I think it's fair to label them as different eras and reading past the dramatic compression of time part of it.

Absolutely, T2 is easily decades apart from TDP/G aesthetically, though officially it only takes place a year or so after.
The Mechanists have an obvious Protestant character, but I always thought they were closest to Calvinism more specifically. I'm (

Essentially, the Mechanists are more or less a steam punk version of Protestantism; their leader is very similar to Martin Luther or John Calvin, the nobility see them as a way to make themselves richer and throw off the old religious order (much like the German nobles of the Reformation) and the Mechanists themselves are progressive whilst being arch-zealous at the same time, like many Calvinist Sects.

is it more important to have a pre thief 1 game = precursor/karath-din era/pagans/murlocs
or a post thief 3 game = thief 4 = not the reboot
i would personally like to see pre thief 1 game first then a post thief 3 game
Azaran on 12/11/2024 at 21:13
Pre-T1 definitely. Garrett's life between leaving the Keepers and the Dark project era
downwinder on 13/11/2024 at 01:36
if the pre thief 1 game was before garrett who in the lore would be a good fit to play?, and have it make sense to go on to garrett in thief 1
or could there be more then one pre thief 1 game since there is many era's, unless you jumped around in time with some kind of precursor magic???

Precursor/Karath-din era
Collapse of Karath-din
Humans are basically all pagans and living in fear of the Trickster and his beasts
Rise of the Builder - era of building cities begins
Trickster defeated by Hammerites led by the Builder (if he really existed)
Hammerite Imperium era - yes this needs to be canon, accept it! =)
Collapse of Imperium, power fragments to various city-states (Blackbrook, Cyric, Bohn, The City etc)
Black Parade/Dark Project Era
Metal Age
TDS

amazing rippedphreak, but you should also add post TDS era as , we are all wanting to know what happens next
and i am not sure the precursors and karath-din era were even close in time? i always figured no one was around when the precursors were around, and only there ruins were left with not much history? by the time karath-din era was around the precursor were only known from there ruins?
also not sure the start of woodsie lord, post karath-din era? not sure i remember anything of him in there history???

Is there a book based on Thief lore?
