Well it could be that for you and something else for another user. But what you mean is willfully patronising elitism, and maybe that's part of TTLG too, yeah.
I don't have a problem with that. It can have it's own appeal.
What I did have a problem with were the posts in this thread who posed pouty concerns that I had all answered in the very first post, because I know this is a touchy topic for you grumpy grouches.

I've said it before and I say it again, TTLG is pleasing to the eye and nice enough to use just because it isn't visually extravagant, and doesn't implement every thing that could be implemented.
Users are quite recognizable enough as it is, from where I'm standing.
Besides, identicons are anything but personal. If a forum required an avatar, I'd rather pick one myself than have an identicon. On the whole, I really don't see any point in using them here.

Incidentally I was thinking about the name too yesterday. I like "identicon" for it's old-schoolish, sci-fish sound. Possibly because it's based on Latin and hence re-traceable, unlike most of the new stuff that all seems to be based on some African or Hawaiian dialect I don't have any connection to.
Anyway, I didn't let myself get distracted and implemented identicons on my own system shock forums the day I had the idea. There's a lot of if's and when's and in fact it's turned off by default, because the default is no graphics at all, but it's an option. It makes sense there because of the guest posts. And interface-wise I'm going more for an information overload-style (like system shock) rather than TTLG's essential charme.
Ha! Listen to me now, I'm sounding like a gay web-designer! :D
Not trying to offend anyone. Sit easy there on your MacBook Air.

Transform and roll out!
I don't know about anyone else, but I would recognize a name much easier than a little hashed picture.
I don't know that it's really a bad idea to put them on the forum, but I just don't see the need for it.

Are you sure?

I suspect that Koyla meant that they would be in addition to the existing usernames, not a complete replacement. If they're optional in the sense that they're only shown to those that want to see them then it's probably fairly harmless.
However, perhaps the same effect could be generated by a browser-plugin which would have the added benefit of not increasing server traffic.

I'm not entirely sure I see the point in adding icons to people's posts. The whole visual thing seems like a red herring as I'm sure most of us can read a whole book that doesn't have pictures in it.
Plus, as jay pettitt points out rather well, by itself, such an image such as the one in the first post doesn't really lend itself to easy identification. If you need to check the username as well to see who it is, then it's rather pointless, no?
While I use avatars in other forums that have them, I'd pay good money to keep TTLG as it is. Its uncluttered simplicity is a welcome change.

Do books with pictures suck now? And can no one have them because you don't like 'em?
Just say you don't like or want this feature on TTLG, that's fine. But spare me your reasoning.
That means all of you, not just driver.
Obviously I'm the only one who'd like this feature so it's never gonna get implemented here. But that doesn't mean I have to put up with these half-baked, ignorant, pseudo-intellectual and elitist arguments.
