Tequila is the best kind of bad idea.

For me, the optimal aggregate intake rate is about one beer per half hour of partying. A nice, sustainable buzz without going over the top.

You do realise that I'm not talking about partying here - it's relaxing evening drinking. Theoretically.

Switching drinks once (and once only) during the night is the key for me. Start on beer or spirits, end on wine or mixed spirits. Or some other combination.
Once I'm 3/4 through the night (and a little unsteady on my feet) I'll be craving a glass of water. A good chug of cool'n'clear will make the next drink'o'choice taste even better. Repeat ad nauseum.

I have just thought that if one is on the wine, the choices for successive bottles are quite important. Some of the rich Australian (or South African) wines can be a bit "heavy" and you can't really keep drinking them all night. The alcohol content isn't higher as such, but there's something else that makes it more dangerous.
It seems to make sense to switch to a light Italian or French wine after a first, full bodied red, say. In any case, it's a waste to knock back really nice wine as you care less what it tastes like as time goes on...

It involved:
4 Budweisers (the original ones, not that A-B weak near-frozen gnat's urine, gods be praised)
about 1 litre of red wine & cola (known as 'shroom' here)
4 shots of Jelzin apple vodka
another 2 Pilseners (other brand)
and a Vanilla cigar
I drank half a bottle of water when I got home at 4am today, slept until 8 and I'm still feeling a bit tipsy, but no hangover AT ALL, yay!
The only thing better than b'day parties are UNEXPECTED B'DAY PARTIES:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
'specially if they start as ordinary pub meeting, then develop into a great concert and end up in all-forgiving, benevolent pink haze :)

A highly vital difference in my opinion. I can enjoy a bottle of wine solo over the period of an evening and I will feel no ill effects the following morning, generally due to the fact that I'm savouring the alcohol and not drinking it merely for the intended buzz. Very often I shall only have one or two glasses of wine in an evening and that can give a minimalistic buzz similar to a sugary coke after a hard run or whatever.
Party drinking, I'm afraid, I'm pretty much a poor statistician. No experimental measurement would ever suffice. There are times where I will drink a phenomenal amount of alcohol over a long period of time and suffer very little or no ill effects then there are what I like to call the dumbfuck moments where I guzzle too much in a very short time period and either slump unconscious in a corner before the party is over, or I end vomiting rings around myself and lying in a comatose drooling puddle.
Actually, to be fair, I pretty much never get a hangover if I don't have a fuckup night - with the exception of mixing my wines after pulling long and hard on the one varietal, or mixing my drinks in a really precipitous and hazardous fashion.

Oh right, St. Paddy's. I missed that one today. I had some champagne to toast my baby girl and the arrival of a helpful family member though. Nice fuzzy glow.
