In the beginning it's linear: You start on Deck 2, and then climb down to Deck 1 (although you can climb back up at any point to find items), and then take the elevator to Deck 3.
Once you gain access to Deck 4, however, you now have two options: explore Deck 4 or explore Deck 5. I'm curious about your approach: did you explore one deck at a time, or did you travel back and forth to your liking? I think most people would try to search every room on Deck 4 before moving on to Deck 5. What I did was that I tried to find recreational activities on Deck 5, before spending much time on Deck 4. I think Deck 4 was more difficult so it was a good strategy.
Looking back, this is the only part of the game where you have access to more than one new areas simultaneously. Cool.

I thought, and I could be mistaken because it has been a while, but I thought that if you tried to go to Deck 5, there was a door locked pretty early on that prevented you from actually exploring the deck before going to 4.

you will gain access to deck5 after you talk to Polito on deck4.
