You can do that in dozens of other engines already, but yes, I'd suppose you could do so if you were so inclined.

I understand :) But we can be ambicious and visualise a new project based on it :P
I suppose, but my understanding was that this engine would require some of the original Dark Engine assets to run, that it would partially act like a front end system.

I think I myself don't understand this project. It seems to me that this is a massive huge undertaking and long term effort that will in the end (if the end is ever reached, which seems unlikely) have only a very small payoff.
Why not work on Dark Mod instead, which always could use an extra hand, and since they are very far along and are clearly headed for a real finish there is no worry of wasted effort, and the payoff will be huge!
Tons of work, maybe wasted, small payoff
vs
Less work, not wasted, massive payoff
Am I missing something?
Don't get me wrong, the idea/notion seems really cool on the surface, but I'm just saying like I see it, so let me know if I'm not seeing something right

People have modern systems that have trouble running Thief 1 and 2.
People still play Thief 1 and 2.
People still make fan missions for Thief 1 and 2.
Thief 1 and 2 has that 'look and feel' that can't be replicated on the doom/quake/unreal engine.

The goal is really very simple: to create an open source platform to run original and FM Thief/Thief 2 missions well enough to remove the necessity of the original Dark Engine. This is advantageous for two reasons: A) to immortalize Thief, ensuring that it can run on any platform/OS down the road either "natively" or with end-user modification and B) to enhance and provide features that improve upon or remove the original constraints of the Dark Engine. So, ODE is to Thief as Dark Places or Tenebrae is to Quake. Something fairly small like widescreen support will be the main draw initially, though over time, the engine may be extended to support a fully unified lighting model, new control schemes, 5.1 surround sound and, perhaps, ray tracing.
The Dark Mod has an entirely different goal altogether. In my opinion, the payoff with TDM is neither larger nor any smaller than will be the payoff with ODE.

Well that does make it sound a bit more worthwhile, so I wish you the best and hope to play on ODE sometime in the future

True, true. The engine won't be distributed with any game related data. It's up to the users to buy a copy to use it.
I don't say that it would be impossible to create a whole new game using the engine, but this can also be done using numerous, maybe more modern, engines.
For example, I found this thing a few weeks ago, it seems nobody talks about it, at least I did not hear anything: (

Wow! :wot:

I guess nobody talks about it because they haven't heard about it, which would make sense given that all that project seems to have achieved is a decision on what engine to use, and a Wiki full of spelling mistakes.
Who knows, maybe something will come of it, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
