@Huckeye: Thanks! Testing is far ahead, but I'll try to remember you wanted to help with it.
@dracflamloc: Perfect. We're in lack of coders. Right now, there is a design discussion going on, you're welcome to assist/post your ideas/whatever.

Don't know if anyone else has done this yet, but I sent a message to (
http://corporate.sci.co.uk/Contact_us/contactSend.aspx) SGi/Edios asking about the possible release of the Thief Source code.
Quote:
Dear SCi/Eidos;
I am a long time Eidos and Thief fan, and I was interested in know about the possibility of the release of the source code for Thief I & II's "dark engine". Who can I contact regarding this issue, what would prevent the release of the source code to the Thief community?
The Thief I & II games are old but despite this the thief series still has a good fan base due to the large amount of fan made missions for the game since the release of DromEd, the Thief I & II level editor. There have been issues with the compatibility of the game with newer hardware, and the Thief Community would like the source code to ensure that the Thief Games will be able to run on new hardware and future operating systems.
Thank you for your time,
Michael Cleveland

Certainly can't hurt.

Don't forget System Shock 2. It also might be worth mentioning that the community contributions can strengthen their existing IP, not too sure how much that argument would work though.
Forgot for a second that System Shock is an Origin/EA IP.

@AntiMatter_16: I'm certainly looking forward to see the reply!
I thought this was a lost thing, because everybody says "forget it", there is a petition which didn't help much till now (but it is still a good idea to sign it), and Because of the fact that SS2 shares the same code base, but was released by EA, not EIDOS (So who is the owner of the source code? EA or EIDOS - or irrational games?). I think this was discussed a few times before.
This is my subjective opinion: I personally doubt anyone will waste their time to do such a thing as a free release. I suppose communication between EA and EIDOS would be needed (because of the shared code base), so without giving them some money/profit vision, they'll probably just respond "it would be too troublesome"/"No plans are made to release the code"/whatever. I sure hope I'm wrong.
This was the main reason, together with the fact that Thief/SS2 games are slowly becoming unplayable (between others), to start the project to write it from the scratch.

I hate resurrecting old threads, but did you end up getting a reply?
I'm really keen to see the openDarkProject continue.
There are examples of similar community projects that have been successful (though at the moment, I'm having difficulty finding examples :erg: )

I know this is an old thread, but I can't hope for the OpenDark engine's completion.
There is so much effort that so many people have put into making so many mission, but as time passes, less computers are able to play these levels.
It would be great to play Thief missions under Linux and Mac OSX.
Texture enhancement packs could be made. I've been making textures for T3, but they could be used for any engine capable of rendering them.
With modern textures and lighting, perhaps with dynamic lights and bump maps, we could rediscover how well the game play has held up.
Perhaps the missions could be converted to another engine such as the Doom3 or Quake 4 engine?

I imagine when TDM (based on Doom3) is ready, there will be some nostalgic souls who will go and recreate OMs from all three Thiefs using it. I'd love to see something like LOTP or RtHC redone with a new engine, and I'm sure others would too. Plus all the voice work is already done. :cheeky:

Just noticed this thread. I have wanted a replacement engine for Thief 1/2 for a long time. Modern PCs have a number of problems running these games. I'd like to be able to play them well into the future, as they are, and I'm really enjoying some other replacement engijes, like the ones for Duke Nukem 3D, the Doom/Heretic games, and Rise of the Triad.

Duke Nukem 3D
The T2 FM I'm going to be releasing next week has a Duke Nukem mode you can play, which of course means "kill everything that moves", and features some one-liners from DN3D.
