but maybe with a new studio head, the game will get a change of direction.
I hope to God it will!

Stephane D'Astous is out.
Perhaps to create another Eidos studio in Canada (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary)...

I touched on this a little on the EM forums, but maybe with a new studio head, the game will get a change of direction.
I hope so, but I fear it may be too late. Most of the game seems completed at this point.
I will say one positive thing about this game, the graphics look amazing. If only it were a good Thief game... :(

OP is spot on from what I've seen of the game so far. They have ruined Thief 4.
They have made a completely different type of game that bears little relation to the subtlety (on many levels) that the original had.
You get the feeling that although the team say they have played the original and stayed true to it's DNA, they haven't really understood what made the game appealing in the first place.
OR if they have they have willfully ignored it to appeal to more mainstream players.
That is the problem. The original game was the opposite of most games when it came out because it made you wait and time things before you could take action.
This required patience but it paid off.
They are eliminating this element to appeal to ''modern'' gamers. That is console /shoot-em-up gamers, who won't have the patience to play that style.
This essential attitude of sacrificing the original elements of the game that made it an Indie hit and not a mainstream one is why this development team have failed the franchise.
Its clear they aren't interested in really developing the franchise. They say re-imagining the world allows us to be creative. You know what else allows you to be creative? Actually being creative and writing a sequel to the story.
The fact they call Thief 4 just Thief tells you they are ignoring the past. They probably think their game is superior because it has better graphics... meh..
Getting rid of the main actor as well is a pointless move that shows their lack of interest in the fanbase and the game itself.
Not using Eric Ambrosius music is another cardinal sin. These guys have no understanding how those two elements are integral to the feel of the game...
A real shame. I hoped after the Deadly Shadows debacle it would get back on track, but no, the worst thing that could have happened did.
At least there are thousands of maps for the old games available thanks to the modders.
I wonder if they even know who Benny is...? :(

Thief 3 still had a good reception, though less than the others. I liked it despite the flaws; it was still
Thief. Thief 4 is going in a whole other direction.

Though I detested TDS for multiple reasons, it was still Thief in that it continued the saga of Garrett and his world. T4 is a travesty, a cheap imitation regardless of the fact that it's costing EM/SE over $300 mil to produce. Open letter to Eidos Montreal: please go back to the drawing board, re-title this game to something other than 'Thief' and re-name your protagonist something other than 'Garrett'. Then you can pretty much do whatever you'd like to the game and no one will give a flying rat's ass.
At least, no one here at TTLG, of course.
