Since they turned Jenivere into Basso's bird
It was just concept art, not an introduction of characters. Concept art is basically just concept artists making up shit. It doesn't necessarily end up in the game.

I thought we already had ..... repeatedly.
Many of these are largely unimportant, if they had got the core of the game right.
Quote:
-third person segments to offer respite from the immersive first person perspective
It's not for "respite". Labelling it as such is unhelpful. I'd rather we don't have it but this is an amber flag at worst since most of the game is first person.
Quote:
-contextual jumping/climbing/leaning to replace the freeform movement in the previous games
Yep, this is awful.
Double red flag - seriously affects the nature of the gameplay. In other words, it's total bollocks.
Quote:
-the addition of a swoop mechanic for a faster, more action-oriented stealth gameplay
-the addition of hands that are almost constantly in the player's view and a shroud in the corners of the screen
-a convenient minimap
-the loot glint
-directions provided by the protagonist
-RPG progression, equipment upgrades, and focus abilities
Meh. Don't use this stuff. The hands and the directions are irritations, not deal breakers. Amber flag.
This is bad news. Red flag.
Quote:
-shift the focus away from immersive slow stealth to a more action oriented gameplay
-a more generic gothic grimdark setting
-The removal of magic
-the disappearance of those silly dinosaurs, as you have so eloquently called the burricks, as well as zombies and other known fantasy creatures in the Thiefverse
-we now have modern swearing in the game
-The new hip and edgy Garrett (he is now sporting a corset and wearing makeup)
-Eric Brosius's awesome ambient music
-Stephen Russell's iconic characters
- a cinematic semi-open experience ripe with metagame elements and scripted sequences
Amber flags. Not good but these won't ruin the game.
Expecting stuff like Eric's music is asking a bit much.
Quote:
-some references to the old games hidden in the corners
This is pretty cool actually. Remember the massive Thief Easter Egg in Dishonored? That was a trip! Green flag!

The sarcasm is rather unnecessary and just plays into Eidos' desire to view the old schoolers as whiny purists who can never be satisfied.
That said, I agree with every real point you made. I have been rather relentlessly optimistic about my wait-and-see approach but the contextual jump/lean/swoop, QTE's, press X to win, invisible walls, and, and, and... have finally convinced me. I won't buy this game.
Any hidden positives would just be buried too far beneath a mountain of drek.
I'm so sad. :(

I was just re-posting the items from Starker's letter, not making them up as I went along, but oh well. I thought the sarcasm was very mild and amusing; I've read far worse directed towards EM in this forum. Imo it doesn't really matter since a lot of us believe they stopped listening a long time ago anyway.
I really, truly wanted to love this game. But the more I read and hear and see regarding T4 makes it impossible for me to do so. I had really hoped that this game would become a huge success upon its release, regardless of my negative feelings towards it, I honestly hoped I was wrong and that somehow EM would manage to pull it all together and create a real Thief game. But now I don't - only because if it does sell successfully then it will only encourage EM to continue making more trainwrecks just like it.
:(

It's not like they needed an excuse before.

Ah. But... but... if only we behaved, maybe they would start listening to us after all these years? Maybe this time, now that they are in full production and set on finishing the game, it will be different?*
* Note for the sarcasm-impaired: this is sarcasm.

They already reached that conclusion without our help. The disconnect between what they want to do and what the fans want isn't going to shrink. They're not stupid and they know the sensibilities of the existing tafferbase, and they consciously decided to ignore it.

I touched on this a little on the EM forums, but maybe with a new studio head, the game will get a change of direction. Stephane D'Astous is out, and the guy who was in charge of DXHR (David Anfossi) is now running EM, at least on the development side.
