I'd rather not use any mods/patches yet. I like to play games the way they're shipped at first
I would still seriously recommend at least using BTmod. It doesn't make any gameplay changes, just vastly improves the inventory and HUD to make the game more friendly to PC users. Trust me, by the time you get to level 12 or so, unless you are an inventory management guru, you will get very tired of spending ages scrolling through all those keys, potions, ingredients and misc quest items with the default inventory.

This post speaks the truth.

steo is right. you will at least want to use BTmod, since it changes the interface; no actual gameplay changes.
I know how you feel sluggs, with the whole thing about waiting till after you beat the game. I used to think like that. I couldn't resist though.:ebil: Some things you just cant go without I think. :cheeky: but this game takes many many hours. can you handle the pressure of wanting to install a mod, but holding urself back?:p We will see.

My potions inventory still has the scroll thing going on but the other inventories are in the easier grid format (I'm pretty certain I have BT mod on...). How can I make the potions subsection change to the grid format?
However I sometimes get overlapping items which makes it near impossible to pick on of them - weird bug - any fixes?

And/or DarkUI + Immersive Interface. DarkUI gives you a nice dark brown background for the menus & inventory, so you don't glare your eyes out while sneaking. Immersive interface makes the HUD muchsmaller and lets you move it around a bit, so it's not like the lower 1/4 or your screen like the default. No gameplay changes in either just some nice interafce tweaks :)

Ya this game is a lot of fun. However I regret getting it from D2D. I just found out I can't use the Thieves Arsenal mod which sucks big time. If I had known certain mods wouldn't be availible by using it, I would have bought a hard copy.
I have a few mods installed anyway. I'm using Francesco's leveling mod, however not certain whether it's working or not. Part of the mod is a new creatures and items, and I did come across a couple of weird looking creatures once while wandering through the wilderness, however only that one time. If anyone else is using this mod should I notice more changes from the vanilla game?
Parts of the game are very very tough. For me anyway. I'm currently level 9, but when I was level 7 found this dungeon that had a few mages who had some skels and some sort of undead warrior or something that I had to fight at one time. I ran around like a chicken with it's head cut off.
It must have taken me 15 or 20 times to finally beat them and when I did I think it was mostly luck, but the game certainly is challenging. I almost turned the difficulty down I was getting so frustrated, but toughed it out and glad I did. Even as hard as I'm finding it, the game really is incredibly complex and well thought out, and I'm personally not sure why so many people bitched about it when it first came out.
Good stuff!
Oh and does anyone know which mods can be used with D2D? For me it seems to be a crap shoot which will work and which won't. I can't even get the OB mod manager to work. I extract it to the data folder and everytime I try to use it, it tells me that it "must be installed to the OB main data folder" which it is.

If you like this game you should try Morrowind, i think it's even better.. Oblivion is just a huge forest and not very (imo) interesting to explore after a while. Morrowind has lots of different areas (even more with the expansions).. But i guess it depends on what you enjoy, having fun exploring new cultures, cities, enviroments etc is the most important thing in a RPG for me, Oblivion is very disapointing in that sense + it feels really small compared to Morrowind.

Vurt, I'm going to have to cut you off on that. While, yes, the story is much better, morrowind was an all around, great game. I must say Oblivion had the convenience of the game nailed on really good. After a while, you get really used to fast travel, horses, lovely graphics, and a better combat system. Tired of that freaking dice roll. All in all, if you did that to Morrowind, it could be one of the greatest games ever. But, unless you PREFER taking it the slow way and many of these things, it would more or less become a CHORE to play morrowind after a while.

I agree with Gorgon. I personally didn't like Morrowinds combat either nor the long walking sequences with seemingly nothing around for miles. But I will confess to it having a much more diverse terrain. The thing to me was though, the game just seemed very depressing.
I also found the quest log very confusing, (could never figure out where to go or what to do next), and even with the manual found myself going to the forums all the time just to figure out how to do something. (enchanting weapons etc). So I gave up on it after about 20 hrs even though I really wanted to like it.
Then again, I'm not a hard core RPG'er. People say they've "dumbed down" OB with the quest markers and so forth, and it's the truth. But for someone like myself who hates wandering around aimlessly and getting lost, it's perfect. It still gives you a ton of freedom if you want to play it that way, or tells you exactly what to do next if that's your playstyle.
Plus the things people have done with mods is pretty amazing.
