I do recommend using some mods for the game especially OOO's mod (including the patch for it). OOO's mod is a compilation of mods basically and does some great stuff.

yeah, Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul (or OOO) mod is a good thing to use. im still using 1.23 though, because im hesitant to upgrade to 1.3 since supposedly it adds lots of mods to the game. (packaged with it) Unless you can turn off some of the features. Anyone who knows about 1.3, can you give me some insight here?
sluggs: id try out ooo, and the reason why is: it changes it to where monsters can actually be higher level than you, instead of leveling with you like in vanilla oblivion. for example, if you level up to say level 4 in vanilla oblivion, a creature will level to 4 as well. the developers of the game were trying to make it easier on the player, but in turn it adds to the fact that there is no challenge. so if you want challenge, or at least a more realistic feel to oblivion, id suggest ooo. unless of course you like being able to own everything that comes in ur path.

I don't use OOO myself, but some of the monsters can still prove quite a challenge, especially in a group of three.

Who's the third one? :p

@matthew: hmmm, i never really thought about in a group, but I can see how that can be a challenge. I was just thinking of one enemy at a time. Also, I should take into account the difficulty slider. Some people might have their sliders different... but even still, i hold that OOO makes oblivion better.:ebil:

I recommend playing it unmodded. As much as everyone hates the levelling system, I think it adds a lot of strategy to skill-improvement that keeps the game from becoming ridiculously easy until you're level 30 or so. It's not like Morrowind where you can beat almost anything that isn't a member of the tribunal once you have a jinksword. Playing as a thief or an assassin is really exciting imho because it forces you to actually use the skills you're developing instead of just using them for cheap level-ups. If you just make a zillion potions to up your alchemy skill you better be using those potions in combat if you want to see a benefit from them.
Edit: Well, maybe not completely unmodded. I use the official plugins, of course, but the one thing they truly didn't do well (aside from the stupid grass, which I turn off) is the murkiness of the water.

The flip side of that though is that if you do wind up ballsing your character up by say, playing as a diplomat or whatever, the game becomes annoyingly difficult. I also find that the game gets a bit stale when almost every encounter is just as hard as the next. Its also nice to actually get some real benefits from levelling so you can go back and annihilate that cave of bandits which once upon a time would have completely owned you.
Personally, I would greatly recommend OOO V1.31 over 1.23. It adds a lot of really cool stuff like monsters and items. You now get cloaks and capes for your character and you can get illuminate staffs which function like torches but don't run out and also staffs which you can use as shields. A lot of the third party mods which are included with it are optional so you can pick and choose as you like.
I also notice from those screenshots that you aren't using BTmod, a must have imo since it makes some major improvements to the HUD/inventory/journal. I recommend checking the oblivion mod thread as well as the oblivion mod wiki and perhaps TES source for mods.

hmm sounds cool. Oh ok, I was wondering if the stuff was optional. thats good. well, even if i decide to use 1.3, i already use 1.23 so id have to use wyre bash and fix the save right? did you do this?

I'd rather not use any mods/patches yet. I like to play games the way they're shipped at first, then when I've completed them, I'll update them and replay them with the extra content, patches, etc.

Level 30? Geeze, I'm only at 4! :o Looks like there's much to do yet! :D I guess at that stage, you're an indestructable killing machine! Hmmm...

Oops, I forgot about that one - I use it as well, very handy for inventory management.
