He really didn't put his foot in his mouth, though, when what he is stating is correct. Unlike Prince Philip who could say he's all for taxing lepers and flogging serfs just because that's what he wants government to do, this guy would be fulfilling the wishes of his electorate.
But he's backtracked now. The impression I get is of someone who's trying to look good rather than think about what he was saying. He could have made some kind of holding statement.
In principle, of course you do what your voters want, not that I think any of them really do and I have little confidence that any of them mean what they say anyway. But no-one in their right mind, surely, would expect someone to vote for something like that. Except in America maybe. :)
It's a bit Evelyn Beatrice Hall-ish writing as Tallentyre. You know, the quote attributed to Voltaire: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". Which in princple, again, is great. But in practice? We have laws against inciting this, that and the other these days.

Um ... the US Constitution: the 13th Amendment prohibits slavery. Even if a majority pass a law for it, it couldn't pass and would be struck in the courts. For that matter, even if there wasn't a 13th Amendment, it should still be struck ... because of John Locke's vision of rights. When people come to form a government, they don't give the gov't all powers to do everything. They reserve certain fundamental rights for themselves, not being enslaved being one of them.
It's just funny that, in trying to be patriotic or whatever(?), the guy is trashing the constitution to make his point.

Even without the extreme example given here, I think he's within his rights to ignore what his constituents want and vote for what he thinks is right. I'd say his only responsibilities are to not misrepresent himself during the election, and then to govern with what he perceives as the public's best interests at heart. It's the people's responsibility to vote for someone with the values they want.
Otherwise, don't you effectively have direct democracy?

I read an article a while back that was essentially a Prince Philip 'greatest hits' and some of them were just plain funny. It also seemed that he might be trolling more often than not.

How the hell could you fend off a Christian vampire? .... crucifix wouldn't work.
Garlic and silver bullets would still work.
