Jimmy was a famous poet, 60 years old,
He had a heart attack, and he died.
He was a friend of mine.*
(

I read Basketball Diaries twice. It's one of those books that hits you because it's so visceral that you know it wasn't just written - it was lived. More than that, it filled in a lot of gaps for me in understanding my family. All of my uncles were involved in the drug scene in NYC in the '70's and 80's to one extent or the other, and so many of their friends ended up dead or in jail that I lost count. One of them was even a talented high school basketball player who pissed away a chance at a scholarship, so it was easy to draw the parallels.
Not everyone who lived that life came through the other side, and fewer still were able to express it with the raw beauty that Carroll provided.

You finally got an obit thread title right!
I don't have strong feelings one way or the other for Jim, but I like the song and I loved the movie.
RIP

FUCK! SOMEONE ALWAYS BEATS ME TO THESE THREADS!
And I'd literally been waiting for this opportunity, with an almost identical title already prepared.
