goddammit dethtoll. goddammit.
Says the guy who's spent
ten years making the same joke about a
single movie that nobody cared about after six months. I don't care how much of a geek sacred cow he is, as long as Joss Whedon continues to be a pretentious, self-absorbed, depressingly predictable hack, I'm damn well going to say so.
Besides, he's done worse things than rape one of my favourite film series, which he was only half-responsible for anyway.

Actually Whedon's original screenplay of Alien Res was much worse than what we got. He had a giant spider monster in place of the newborn.

Must've been executive-produced by Jon Peters at that stage...

Apartment Zero - A stuffy British sociopath and a slick American psychopath room together in Argentina: a darkly comedic little gem of a thriller results.

Anyway, can we do one line anticipation?

True Grit : Though I have never chewed, tobacco manifest itself in my mouth just so I could spit it across the room, wide eyed, at the thought of this.

I'm not going to lie, it looks pretty cool, but the trailer also makes it seem like the film might be missing the point of the source material.
Everyone I've talked to who's read the book says it's quite comedic in nature. This adaptation just looks like they're going for grittiness alone, no pun intended. In other words, it could be No Country For Old Men when it should be more Oh Brother Where Art Thou?.
Of course, the Coens seem to like doing dark/borderline comedies anyway, so that's probably what they're going for here.
Not sure about Jeff Bridges, though. His Rooster Cogburn seems a bit OTT.

Will be watching True Grit.
But I don't know the story and wtf is it with these spoilerific movie trailers? Ffs.
Muzman on 5/12/2010 at 11:44
Yeah, the original film is pretty light hearted from what I can remember. Plus the period it was made tends to lighten things too. Still, it's pretty grim subject matter; murder and retribution, life on the road etc. I don't think the revisionist Western has aged to the point where we can go back to the cheerful adventures of Roy Rodgers or whatever.
Striking that balance between humerous adventure and grim reality seems like a bit of a Coen specialty. This seems like their mainstream movie really, so I doubt it'll go anywhere entirely unexpected. Just be really well done (I hope anyway).

Jesus shit on sticks with the cocking fucks can we move on? We know you hate Joss Whedon. You told us once. We get it. Never speak of this again.

I don't hate Joss Whedon, but I wouldn't be upset to hear he'd been sucked into the intake of a taxi-ing 747. The man writes boring tripe but gets away with it because the genres he chooses are stuffed to the kills with even more boring tripe.
