Just got a new PC with Windows 7 and was kind of excited to be able to use compatibility mode and play some of my older games like Thief. However, things never work easily for me. Thief 1 gave me the message about NT and refused to install, and Thief 2 installed but freezes shortly after starting a mission. I joined this forum to maybe find a fix. I found a way to get 1 to install, but encountered the freezing problem and started working on that. The couple things I tried made the game refuse to play the cutscenes. I notice all of them involve making it run on only one CPU core. Think that could be the cause of my new problem? Any fixes? Thanks.

Allright. I've downloaded the DDFix file, but it says to extract it to the Dark Engine folder and I don't know where that is. I looked on the HD and the game disc, but don't see a folder named that or anything close. What's the folder called and where is it(on both games)? Sorry if that's common knowledge here, I've only modded or changed games like this a few times over the last several years, and most of those installed themselves.

Sure, the Dark Engine is the name of the Engine used in Thief, Thief Gold, and Thief 2. So you should place a copy of the files in the same directory as the THIEF.EXE file for Thief (or Thief Gold) and the same directory as THIEF2.EXE file for Thief 2.

Now I've got the freezing problem again. Unless it's in the wrong place. Does Computer > OS (C:) > Thief look right?

You need to place the ddfix.ini and ddfix.dll files in the same directory as thief.exe. By default this is C:\Thief\Thief.exe, but have a look in Windows Explorer / My Computer to make sure.
Unless you plan on hex-editing the thief.exe file yourself, you'll need to download the patched binary files (in the first post in (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121449) this thread) and place them in the Thief directory too.

Also make sure the video resolution in ddfix.ini matches the one you set in the game
