But as it will be multiplatform thing, there is little hope that drag&drop grid-based inventory will be back.
The_Raven on 21/8/2008 at 14:03
God, I hope they keep the drag and drop inventory from the first game. Especially because that was the first thing Warren Spector admitted that they fucked up royally in Deus Ex: IW. Plus, I can't see any reason why drag and drop wouldn't work on a console. It may not be as intuitive, but I don't see why it couldn't be done. Chances are, though, you are probably right.

I thought the tetris inventory was a fun little side challenge, but it wouldn't bother me at all if they replaced it with something less fiddly. As long as they model both bulk and encumbrance, it's all good.

... and I'll be happy.
Happy? Is this the cynical angry spiteful ZylonBane I've known for ages? What's becoming of the world?

Stop helping.
Oh, okay, that's better, I feel grounded again.
I think a lot of what ZB said has merit, much of what made DX enjoyable was very much the opposite of what you'd call stream lined. (The philosophy for stream-lining nowadays being that you have to have all of your guns right in front of you, readily obvious targets, and your armor should probably glow, so in case you happen to be playing your fps in third person, also a new common trend, you won't forget where you are.) I feel like having a new team work on it could go either way (assuming we're looking at a capable, insightful and productive team) you'll either have a lot of motivation to produce a really excellent game that looks back to what made DX work, or you'll have a team that's striving so hard to do well that they look at sales figures of games in the last three years and do a misguided re-hash of whatever had top sales and the whole thing is a flop. Or you just have a terrible team who make a bad game.
What little is out already looks interesting, but I have to wonder how much it will make sense in the DX universe, it looks like they're setting up something of a massive rift between non-augmented people and cyborgs (like what IW tried to do with the templars, but from a more social stand point rather than a militant/psuedo-religeous one), and that rift isn't so prominent in DX (it's there, I know, but there wasn't the kind of deep seeded bigotry it seems like they're trying to set up, just some slight unsettling that people feel) so the whole thing will be interesting so see how it fits. Even if it doesn't I like the premise and hope they make a good game (plus I think DX can produce a prequel much more readily than a sequel, two of the three endings resulted in a world drastically different from the one we're used to, and the game used all three.)

It may not appear in the game too much, but all that stuff is in the Deus Ex bible.

The bible also has Tong "bristling with augmentations", Page being an unkempt nerd etc.

I wish that developers as a whole - and Eidos in particular, with DX3 - when they KNOW in advance that they'll be doing a PC version of their title: would design for the PC first, and then find a way to make their game work on consoles. Not the other way around.
That way, they can make a title like DX3 as deep and complex as they like, to start with. Then they can remove what they need to, in order to scale it down to fit in the more limited environment of consoles.
It's much easier to design a competent gameplay system and rich content, that all unfolds beautifully, if everything is designed in full. Right from the beginning. Rather than try to find ways to artificially shoehorn in content later, that feels as bolted-on and misplaced as it is.
van HellSing on 22/8/2008 at 19:06
That's not feasible, sadly. Consoles is where the money is. They have to think about the consoles first. Otherwise, they might end up with stuff that's simply not possible on a console. And then they're screwed real good.
And that thing about artificial shoehorning, well, it works both ways - things that worked great on PC are bound to become clunky and unintuitive on consoles. And then you have to worry about console gamers complaining. Which is the majority of your customers.

According to Carmack, it IS possible if one's using id Tech 5.

Err, what?
