However the game turns out, it will still be better than IW. Making a new Deus Ex game worse than IW is physically impossible.

Things are never bad enough not to be even worse.

Or better.
Retrospective is always 20/20. If nothing else they'll have IW as an example to draw on. The complaints lodged against IW are obvious as day.

I doubt they can make a game that suffers from consolitis as badly as IW, I'll give you that. But will the game be better? I'm not so sure. Despite its issues, IW still had a good story with a strong connection to DX. I think it will be hard to come up with a new story that is both connected to the story line of DX & IW and as rich in conspiracy.

Is it still too early to start building my guillotine?
EDIT: That or I can send the Eidos Montreal team shirts that read, "I defaced a beloved franchise."
The backlash isn't going to be nearly as acute this time I'm guessing. The hard-core fans already know there is a very good chance this will suck just as much as before, so there is not really anywhere to go but up (at least in terms of pissing people off).

At least they'll have the example of Invisible War's spectacular crash and burn to guide them. While IW had its share of technical issues, the real reason it flopped was because the development team had such a fundamentally misguided notion of what made Deus Ex memorable. Harvey Smith has even acknowledged that they screwed up by so oversimplifying IW.
So just give me a deep character growth system, a packrat-sized inventory, a not-too-distant-future setting, a conspiracy-soup plot, big nonlinear levels, likable characters, some pseudo-philosophical babble, and sunglasses... and I'll be happy.
Really, the hardest part is coming up with likable characters.
Jashin on 16/8/2008 at 16:46
NO, not likable characters. Compelling characters, who are likable or otherwise, in situations a player can relate to. The Rentons are just about the most memorable characters from DX because they're human.
Also there needs to be a lot of small details, like model respiration; the kind of humanizing details that are lost to just about every other game developers.

You know, I thought that about the Ultima series, but they went and surprised me nonetheless.
