What exactly is the difference? Remember English isn't my native language.
I have always thought girl refers to someone younger than me or around my age, while female is a word that fits all age.
By the way, I do kind of look like a geek, mainly because of my glasses. (I need those to see stuff, ya know)

Well girl does generally refer to below 20, but I feel that on the internet where you don't know the age of the person girl fills the need just fine. If you want to say woman, then that is fine as well.
