I've just re-installed windows and Morrowind (carefully backing up my saves first). I've re-installed all (I think) the mods that I had before and copied my old saves back.
Now I get a warning that the base file or plugin has been modified since I last saved, I assume that is due to my re-installation but I also get:
Trying to load a bad form in
TES3File::NextForm
File = quiksave.ess
Offset = 524834
and the option to continue, if I do I get lots of messages saying:
Item "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" not found on "player"
then some more about Creeper and one about another NPC before the game crashes.
Has anyone seen this before and if so is it fixable?

I'm not entirely sure but it sounds as though you may not have reloaded one of your old plugins. Where this is the case the program will query all the items and lines of dialogue which were a part of the plugin and are now no longer there. The only thing I can really suggest is to check your plugins again for any you may have missed.
I can't help much more than that, but later on some of the more knowledgeable types, like the moderators, should be online and may be able to help you more.

Solved it. It seems that that save was just totally screwed I managed to find another one from not far back that works fine. The game was acting up when I saved so I guess it was down to that.
Oh well, thanks for the suggestions :)
